In 1963, Madalyn Murray O'Hair won an historic victory in the Supreme Court to ban prayer from public schools. Overnight she became the "most hated woman in America"—a title she bore with honor. For three decades, she made the constitutional separation of church and state her sole mission. Then one day, in 1995, Madalyn, her son Jon and her granddaughter Robin vanished from their Austin home, along with half a million dollars in gold coins. The ample trails they left behind, pursued by a local reporter and a private investigator, led to dead ends. But then the investigation zeroed in on David Waters, a former employee. A headless, handless corpse of a Waters' accomplice that was finally identified after more than three years revealed a web of intrigue and led investigators to believe that the Murray O'Hairs had met with foul play. Eventually, David Waters led authorities to the bodies and was found guilty of murder. Waters died in jail; another accomplice, Gary Karr, is still in Federal prison serving a life sentence. |
