Fig and Mascarpone Focaccia

Fig-Foccacia_152_130.jpgA couple of years ago when I was traveling through the Cinque Terre region of Italy, I discovered Dolce Focaccia or "Sweet Focaccia" made with fresh figs and mascarpone cheese. Now, every time I make this quick and easy sweet bread, I am transported back to those beautiful seaside towns famous for focaccia.

Makes 6 servings

1 16-ounce loaf plain focaccia bread
1½ cups mascarpone cheese
½ pint fresh figs, trimmed and quartered
2 tablespoons honey
½ cup hazelnuts, toasted and chopped

Heat oven to 325° F. Place focaccia loaf on a large baking sheet and spread mascarpone cheese generously over the top. Arrange figs in a rustic pattern over the cheese and bake for 15 minutes until cheese has melted and figs are warm. Remove from oven, drizzle with honey, and sprinkle with chopped hazelnuts. Slice into appetizer sized wedges or squares and arrange on a serving platter.
