Khalil's cupboard is bare...literally! After 2 weeks of giving away food, trying to use up what he has, and packing away pots, pans, and utensils, he is left with a kitchen in flux and no where to cook!By Khalil Hymore
I am writing from my new kitchen, which is completely empty, save for the takeout in the fridge that we've ordered and the half eaten boxes of cereal that the previous owners left for us (a house warming present perhaps?). Seriously, who leaves food behind in a house? So weird! Anyway, we did get the new place painted this weekend and it is looking très chic, if I do say so myself. The main reason the kitchen is empty is because we haven't officially moved yet, the movers are coming this week and...well, we aren't exactly ready.
The old kitchen is only half packed and I am still totally undecided about
what to toss (how come Scott seems to part with his possessions so much more easily than I?). We are still debating what furniture to bring and what to give away, which is rough because now that the new apartment is freshly painted it is tempting to start with all new stuff. Too bad that mortgage thingy keeps getting in the way. Even Sophie, our pup, is stressed. Actually she's a mess! 2 weeks of watching the apartment being packed up have sent her over the edge. Unfortunately, she is not the only one. Scott and I are both super grouchy and tired all the time, and my sister keeps coming over to lament the fact that we won't be living across the hall from each other anymore (the culinary duo is breaking up...well, not breaking up exactly, but moving about 10 minutes away from each other, rather than 10 seconds).
It's not easy living in this state of flux--which is how I have been feeling lately. Living out of boxes is impossible and not at all conducive to finding a cute "work" outfit. I usually just throw on whatever is on the top of the box and then spend the rest of my day trying to "pull off" my new look. The worst part is that I am hungry all the time. Don't worry, I won't starve, it's just that I would so much rather eat the food I know how to make than order takeout.
I do my best to cook even though I am limited on time and tools. At first it was frustrating, but now I am over it. I have accepted the fact that for the next couple of weeks my culinary repertoire will consist mainly of cold cereal,
sandwiches, scrambled eggs, and toast. By the way, this is the part where Scott rolls his eyes and mimes some violin action--he hates it when I whine.
Anyway, we just have to hold out for another week or so, until we can get the new place unpacked and feeling like home. Soon I'll be in our new kitchen cooking up a storm, whipping up gourmet meals, and sticking to
my New Year's resolution...hopefully! And when I get bored, maybe I'll try and track down
Julie Powell of
Julie and Julia fame...supposedly she lives in
Long Island City, my new nabe!
