A relaxing (and delicious) Parisian vacation on a fraction of the budget.By Khalil HymoreTypically, August is THE month for summer vacations, but with the economy in turmoil and unemployment at an all time high, it seems that many Americans are choosing to stay home or opting for less expensive travels. Scott and I are taking a vacation to France, but we are definitely being budget conscious. Months ago we took advantage of super cheap airfare (my ticket to Europe has never been so affordable) and booked our accommodations early enough to get great rates. The most expensive part of our trip will probably be the food.
As much as I would like to economize on food during our trip, I cannot go all the way to France and NOT gorge myself on Parisian culinary delights. One thing we did to save a few bucks was we opted for a small apartment rather than staying in a hotel. Not only did we save money (apartment rentals can be much cheaper in Paris than a full service hotel) on the sleeping arrangements, but our apartment comes with a kitchen so we can prepare small meals (and I can test some new recipes!).
Whatever your travel plans are for the rest of the summer, there are some great ways to save money and have a great time:
Do Your Homework! - It's typical to research flights, hotels, and car rentals before you travel, why not do the same for restaurants? Jane and Michael Stern's website,
roadfood.com, can save you from having to suffer through a fast food vacation by sharing with you some of the best food that America's highways and byways have to offer. Additionally, sites like
tripadvisor.com and
yelp.com are full of user generated reviews to help you find the perfect place to stop for a quick and delicious bite to eat. Of course, you could always ask a local!
Pack Food! - Before Scott and I hit the road, we always pack food for the trip. This saves time and money. Some of my favorite recipes to pack for the road:
Steak and Gorgonzola Sandwiches, Leftover
Meatloaf Sandwiches,
Italian Wraps,
Cashews,
Zucchini Walnut Bread,
Citrus Cooler Cookies, and
Chocolate Brownies.
For the Road! - Don't forget, food items makes excellent (and inexpensive) souvenirs or gifts from your trip. They're a great way to remember the fun times you had without taking up loads of space. My cupboards are full of jams, wines, candy, and other non-perishables from my travels (I even have some amazing California walnuts in my freezer--'cause they are the best!).
As my trip to France draws closer, I too am taking my own advice. We'll be driving when we get there so, I'll definitely be packing some lunches for us, and I am doing my homework and enlist advice form friends on where to stop and eat. Can't wait to get back and share my travels with you!
