Our bride-to-be seals the deal with a caterer.
By Sara CardaceI'm happy to report that we are now 99 percent sure that we're going to go with Chef Rossi of the Raging Skillet for our catering needs. John and I snuck out of work last week for a lunch meeting with Rossi to go over all of our thoughts and concerns on
the sample menu she'd proposed.

Our bride-to-be finally finds a dress for her Big Day.By Sara CardacePhew. I was really starting to worry that I just don't have the time or energy necessary to find a cute dress that wasn't ridiculously off the deep end in terms of price. And then--voila! I went to
The Bridal Garden with my fashion-editor friend Lauren and found one just like that.

Our bride-to-be hits the consignment stores in her quest for the perfect wedding dress.
By Sara Cardace
Since things are moving along somewhat well with the wedding planning (though I still have not selected an officiant, planned a shower, mapped out invitations -- egads!) I decided to revisit the lack-of-gown issue. The first in my second round of gown-shopping excursions happened yesterday, when my old friend Jesse and I decided to spontaneously ditch out of work for a couple of hours to check out the wares at
Michael's: The Consignment Shop for Women.

Our bride-to-be starts to compile a guest list for her Big Day.By Sara Cardace
I've finally gotten all the various lists together and the master list is starting to take shape. My ever-organized parents compiled a handy-dandy excel spreadsheet of what we're calling their "dream list" -- basically everyone they'd like to invite if there were no limitations on the head count. Their number came to about 50. Not too bad...

Our bride considers non-bridal dress options.
The more I talk to people about what I'm going to wear to
the wedding, the more I'm reconsidering my former anything-goes attitude. I
still really, really want to avoid spending a lot on the dress, but I'm
thinking there might be some ways to get something a little more fun that's in
my price range.

Our bride-to-be takes a time-out to reassessBy Sara Cardace
Well, I've gone from feeling like I had pretty much everything under control to thinking I have absolutely no clue as to what I'm doing! In the comments for one of my recent posts, several people gently suggested that it might be a good idea for me to hire a wedding planner. Well, I'd love to, of course, but it's just not in the budget-despite whatever discounts they'd be able to get me. Happily, a good friend who moonlights as an event planner has offered to be my eyes and ears on the big day, and she's offered to help me at this stage as well.
With that in mind, I'm using this week's post to get myself in order. An overview:

This week, our bride chews over her caterer choices.
By Sara Cardace
How do I put this gently? Getting in touch with the
different caterers on our wish list has been very...instructive. They really run
the gamut in terms of professionalism, creativity, excitement, etc. I'm already
getting a really negative vibe from some of the people we've contacted, but in
an effort to be even-handed I'm going to give it a bit more time before
unleashing a spew of trash talk in such a public forum. I won't hold my tongue
forever though, promise!

With a lot of the "big" wedding planning out of the way, our
bride's attention turns to her bridal shower.
By Sara Cardace
Readers, I'm starting to understand why people freak out so
much over these things. (Weddings, that is.)
I was really starting to think that I was making good
progress. We have the venue booked, we're waiting on proposals from several
different caterers, our first tasting is this Friday, and I've e-mailed
everyone I know for their thoughts on officiants. The next step will be to
figure out the invitations, I think. We have both our moms working on lists of
who they'd like to invite, and John (a burgeoning graphic designer) is
brainstorming ideas.

It's now time to start looking for the right person to marry
us. Where do I begin?
By Sara Cardace
This week I suddenly find my wedding planning on hold, as we
haven't gotten any proposals back from the caterers yet and the tastings we've
lined up are still to come. A blissful reprieve!
But I'm not taking the week completely off. Apparently, I
really need to find an officiant and book them pronto, since we're now at...let's
see...four, five, six...OH MY GOD, WE'RE AT THE NINE-MONTH MARK. I knew it was
coming...but still. Good. Grief. (Note to self: Enquire whether wedding planning
qualifies as a Xanax-prescribable trauma.)

Sara's fiancé comes to the rescue when the wedding planning,
and caterer-finding, finally takes its toll.
by Sara Cardace
Progress! I'm happy to report that I've successfully gotten
the ball rolling on the catering front. Fiancé John offered to pitch in when he
started to suspect I might lose my mind over the whole thing. Just in time.
I started out by giving him a list of four caterers about
whom I'd heard good things and who seemed like they'd be able to work with our
vision and budget: The Raging Skillet,
Seasons Distinctive Catering,
and Real Food Catering. I also
asked him to get in touch with Flavor NYC,
the catering arm of an uptown restaurant called Bistro Ten 18 that I remember
liking from my college days.
