Finding a dress is even harder than finding a location!
By Sara Cardace
Alas, it appears it's really time to hunker down and start thinking about a dress. My trip to Kleinfeld, though much less horrific than I'd imagined it would be, yielded pretty much the exact results I'd assumed it would: I tried on zillions of dresses I hated, found one I loved, and got momentarily excited before realizing it was far, far too expensive for my blood.
Oh, and I also learned to be self-conscious about the back-fat I never knew I possessed before that fateful day! Wonderful!
Thankfully, I hardly expected to have the dress conundrum solved during one quick trip to Kleinfeld. I've since started going through all of the bridal resources I can find in an effort to narrow down the list of places to a more manageable length.
Lots of local brides-on-a-budget I know swear by David's Bridal. A friend of mine actually just foundĀ--what she swears is--the dress of her dreams there, but--I dunno. The janky website is hardly encouraging. I'm pretty sure I've now spent about three hours going through their online offerings and haven't seen a single dress I liked.
I'm vaguely inspired by Michael's, "The Designer Consignment Shop for Women". My everyday closet is packed with vintage clothing--oh let's just call it what it is, used--that makes me more than happy, so I'm not put off by the fact that another bride would have worn my dress. The small selection doesn't seem promising, but I think I should at least make an appointment to check it out. Note to self.
Another intriguing option is this
I think you are being a little judgemental. You should make an appointment at David's Bridal and see. I got my dress there about 3 months ago and I didn't find one that came anywhere close to it anywhere else. Plus the people that work there are so friendly.
I agree with jewlyn. I got my dress at David's Bridal, too, and it's incredibly beautiful and looks a lot more expensive than it was!
I disagree. The David's Bridal stores I went to had nothing to offer. The service was horrible and the dresses seemed cheaply made. I had much better luck at smaller, more intimate stores where the people really seem to care.
I found plenty of dresses at David's Bridal. They have beautiful dresses. The dresses online are available to you, all you have to do is call the 1800 number and ask them to send a dress to the store closes to you.
Thats what my little sister said.
I did make an appointment. I went there with my daughter & her 10 girls to get them bridesmaids dresses. After being ignored for most of the first hour of our "appointment", someone came to help us. she was nice & got into deep conversation with the girls on how tall they were-- (most of them were 6 feet tall or better, they played college ball).
After 3 1/2hrs later, we found a dress all the girls could agree on, we were all excited-
the saleslady started to take all the info and then
when we asked how long it would take before they came in, She had to go ask. She came back to inform us that --->not one dress in davids bridal comes in xtra length. I guess I felt good time to say something was when the girls tried on the very 1st gown (& any gown after that) & the saleslady saw that they came up to their ankles, or maybe when she said "HELLO" to all these 6 feet tall girls????
Needless to say, the day was a waste & I told the manager that. The saleslady tried to cover herself in front of her manager by saying that she thought we already knew. Everyone else around us (trying on dresses) all had a complaint about something or another & the sadest was a girl who was by herself trying on a bridal gown & the saleslady told her it was perfect for her, but it looked horrible. That bride asked our girls what they thought & we told her the truth.
So I agree.... Davids bridal is useless. The dresses are more money (esp. for alterations) & the quality is not great. Go to a smaller shop or dept. store (macy's bridal, bloomingdales) where they make you feel like your wedding (& your time) IS important & where the salespeople are not just trying to get through to the end of the day with blinders on.
try Bridal Couture in staten island
www.newyorkbridalcouture.com
the gowns / people & place is to die for-
plus they range from all prices.
once you find the one for you, shop that designer for trunk shows-- the prices are usually discounted.
Don't worry, you will know when the dress is right!

I found my dress at Adrienne's on the lower east side. This bridal boutique has a laid back and friendly staff. The dresses are organized by style -- the form fitting gowns and trumpet skirts in one section, a-lines in another and ball gowns in a third section. This makes it more manageable to find the right dress that will flatter you. The prices were reasonable too.
Hi mhof,
Any chance you could give me a ballpark price range on the Adrienne's gowns? They were on my original list of places to check out but I never got around to it. Maybe i should reconsider?
Best,
Dubious Bride
amy, i have to admit that my first wedding dress experience was not the horror i expected it to be. i'd actually read your article about a week before i went in search of my gown, and was sure that i'd probably end up leaving the shop crying if my experience was to be an ordinary one. i held my head up high, though, and marched in there determined that i would not be discouraged if i it took me forever to find the right dress! but i must admit, i loved every one of the gowns i tried on. not because they all looked great on me, but i had promised myself that i would try to be easy on myself. and it was so worth it, amy! i ended up delightfully surprised by just how much i looked like a bride - graceful and delicate - in every single one of the gowns i tried on. i think if we as women were just a bit easier on ourselves, we might just get a glimpse of why our fiances are marrying us in the first place. beauty truly is more than skin-deep.
I went to Davids Bridal and found a great dress. Unfortunately Davids Bridal, without my consent or knowledge, sold my name, address, phone number, cell phone number and email address to numerous vendors. My mail is over flowing with junk mail, I had to disconnect my house phone and I'm still getting 3 to 4 calls a week on my CELL phone from mary kay ladies, tux places, it's it's been a nightmare. I highly recommend NOT GOING TO DAVIDS BRIDAL AND IF YOU DO GIVE THEM ALL FAKE INFORMATION
