The Dubious Bride takes another shot at finding the dress of her dreams.

by Sara Cardace

I'm not even sure how I stumbled across Jenny Yoo, but I'm so glad I did. Kleinfeld wasn't really my bag--I really just want a dress that's classic and simple, and I don't want to spend more than a grand--so after I'd done the fantasy-bride thing there, I went back to the drawing board.

As I mentioned in my last post, my brutally honest friend Molly was headed to town for a visit, and I decided to take advantage of the fact that she was crashing on my couch to force her to go gown-hunting with me. Jenny Yoo has a super-useful website with a somewhat eclectic array of looks, complete with pricing for each style (practically unheard of for bridal boutiques), so I had high hopes. Although: Why does it always make me suspicious when I can actually afford the gowns at a boutique? Living in this town will do that to a girl.

Anyway...it was a rainy, miserable day and the Jenny Yoo boutique is located smack in the heart of tourist-infested Herald Square. We elbowed our way through the slow-going masses, and their umbrellas, and finally found ourselves in front of the glass doors leading into the boutique. I have to say, the service there was totally ideal, at least for a perennially self-conscious girl like myself--easygoing, unharried, unintrusive. The salesgirl greeted us and showed us to the gowns, which were just one rack among many (Jenny Yoo is primarily a bridesmaids boutique), and pretty much left us to our own devices.

...which was a very good thing, because most of the dresses I'd had my eye on looked totally ridiculous on me! For example, I really loved this simple column dress, the Juliet, but, well, let's just say it would look great on a supermodel. A short, carb-loving writer? Not so much.

We moved on from the chiffon styles and quickly became enamored of the dresses with simple, streamlined fronts and dramatic, detailed backs, like the one in the photo above. (Note the black bra--I don't think I'm ever going to get this bridal thing down!)

It was actually the very first structured dress I tried on (the "Mika") that turned out to be what I'm tentatively proclaiming the winner. I decided not to include a photo of it here on the off-chance that fiancé John would stumble across this post, but you can check it out here (be sure to roll your mouse over the photo to see the pretty back).

What do you think?

Maybe it's the picture, but I am not feeling that dress? Is it off the shoulder on one side? Or is that a bow? The picture is confusing. Can you send more then one view of it. Not that totally strangers opinions should even matter to you. I just want to say if that dress is YOU then you get it, because if you like it then I love it for you. Congrates and have a blessed day and I wish you and your fiancee the best life has to offer.

I didn't know SPEEDO was making suits in white. I want one!

I just got my dress yesterday, and I feel its all about the comfort of the gown. the fabric, the weight of the dress, and how you look and feel inside the dress. If you feel beautiful, then go for it.

I have been reading your blogs about dress shopping, or lack there of, and while your complete discontent for gown shopping makes for good writing, i would like to give you one bit of advice. ENJOY DRESS SHOPPING! While the concept weeding through racks and racks of dresses only to be discouraged on the 57th try, disrobing in front of a woman who could be your grandmother, having her handle your breasts and kneed them into a dress like they are dough, and pointing out all of your flaws in a three sided mirror that makes you see angles of yourself you’ve never seen before doesn’t sound like a pleasant day......remember, this will hopefully be the only time you get married and therefore the only time you ever dress shop. So relish the experience, because its what most girls dream of doing, and should be a memorable experience. So make an event out of it....bring your mom, your MOH, bridesmaids, sister, whomever you love and trust the opinion of. Try on anything and EVERTHING...because you may hate what you thought you wanted, and love what you never thought you would. Enjoy this time, and when you find the one (just as you did your fiancé) you will know it, and realize that all the weeding through and the fussing was worth it.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. You have no idea how much they're appreciated! Seriously.

Just to clarify: The dress in the photo above is actually *not*the one I like the best. I didn't want to include a photo of the actual dress within the post because I was worried my boyfriend would come across it and see the dress before realizing what he was doing. And I guess I'm glad that's not the dress as one of commentors has compared it to a Speedo--mon dieu!

Hopefully the one I do like looks a little better? Here's the link: http://www.jennyyoo.com/wedding_alternatives07.html

What do you think? Also, the one I get DEFINITELY won't be as shiny as the one in the photo at the top of this post. That one was in a weird shiny material that I loathed...

More input please!
Best,
Dubious Bride

Definetly the one with the link is much better. I hated the back of the dress in the picture. The new one is much better. But I still think that there is another one out there for you. Maybe something without the yoke in the middle of it. I just think its distracting. I like the gowns that are more of a silhouette to them and are flowing.
Here is a link of what I think you should were or something similiar. Its DB-101

I love the second dress, and I bet you look beautiful in it. I like the simplicity of the dress. It could be a tabula rasa to show off your natural beauty. I think people sometimes forget that we want to see and remember a beautiful BRIDE, not just another great dress.

I am sorry but I cannot even see this dress. The picture is too small and it does not have a connection to enhance and see the style of it. From the back it looks ok
