Inspired by the famous Lucky Shoe Guide in our September issue, and the great stuff we pulled together for our online roundup of accessories under $100, I've begun my quest for the perfect fall shoes.
Right now, they're falling into five categories:
Mary Janes
I'm always drawn to the girlish appeal of this classic shape, but I'm really loving all the new interpretations this season--thicker straps, shorter heels, and worn-in details.
Knee-High Boots
The first things I pick out when fall clothes start hitting the stores are a winter coat and knee-high boots. Both are the first to fly off the racks, always. I'm really into these scrunchy versions right now.
Rugged Flat Boots
I can't wait to wear a pair of these with my new leggings and a baggy sweater. It's the perfect roughed-up item to keep casual pieces from feeling frumpy.
Distinguished Details
Menswear-inspired embellishments keep catching my eye. I can't quite decide which direction to go with the trend--since I like them all. Here's a rundown of the options from sleek loafers to patent leather heels.
Chunky Ankle Boots
This new style has it all: preppy flourishes, great leathers, and an unkempt finish. They'll look great with wool tights and a full skirt or even peeking out from under my new wide-leg jeans.

I'm hoping to go shoe shopping in Florence, Italy and then in Paris, France later this winter when I take the antiquing trip with EuropeAntiqueTrip.com Do you have any advice for a bargain level shopper in those cities?
AntiquesNut: Wow. I'm completely jealous. Sadly, it's been far too long since I was last in either city. Take a look at our online Paris City Guide for some direction:
I would also suggest making a trek--if you have time--outside of Florence to Montevarchi, which is where the famed Prada Outlet lives. Here's a link to a few reviews from people who have been recently:
