As earth-conscious style gets bigger and bigger, I look for some to put on my walls.
Part of my New Years resolution is to be more green, which thus far has been harder than expected, but also truly rewarding. The most difficult task to date has been finding decently designed earth-friendly wallpaper. I was a little shocked by the sheer lack of options out there. My initial search turned up dozens of plain bamboo and linen options, but nothing patterned, which is what I was after.
But then I thankfully found Graham & Brown, a British company that must have realized the need to feel this gap: It challenged the students of Central St. Martins (the famous fashion school in London) to design an entire eco-collection. The top creations were produced using water-based inks with no VOC's or solvents, printed on paper made strictly from managed timber sources. My favorite patterns are The Bittern or Heritage, which is available in four versatile palettes.
Other Eco-conscious options:
Beautiful in detail and design, Woodson and Rummerfield'ssilkscreen chrysanthemum is made with low VOC vegetable inks and dyes--and is recyclable should you ever want to get rid of it. Sadly, at $80 per roll, it's among the steeper options available. Among the 800-plus all-natural wallcoverings stocked by this New Jersey-based company are a few graphic prints, like these turquoise arches. The Phillip Jeffries site sells to the trade only. But you can contact them directly for a vendor in your area. Mod Green Pod is a small company out of Austin, Texas, that at the moment only offers two types of wallpaper, one being the black-and-white design below, which is made from vinyl-free, water-based ink on cellulose paper.
