Modern Furniture Finds on a Dime

Hunting for look-alikes that will have my guests quietly pondering, "Is that the real thing?"

By Heather Summerville

A rainstorm recently quarantined me to my apartment for a good portion of a Saturday, and while it was nice to have an excuse to shuffle around in my pj's at 2 in the afternoon, it also forced me to acknowledge the fact that my clutter is out of control. Not surprising, given that my decor consists of tiny knickknacks I collect on my travels, a few family heirlooms, and a whole bunch of cheap furniture that's survived seven moves in just as many years and has all the banged-up edges to prove it. So my new mission is to conquer the mess and look for a few streamlined additions that will hopefully make my apartment look chic and pulled together.

Half-Off Shopping Frenzy

It's nearing the end of the season, so now's the time to score those last few just-out-of-my-price-range pieces.

There are some things I can't justify paying full price for. I see them. I want them. But when the time comes to fork over the cash, the angels of my better nature chime in and I put my wallet away. It's about now in the season, however, that I revisit those bypassed purchases I can't stop thinking about to see if maybe they're on sale (and still miraculously available in my size).

Back-to-School Shopping Envy

Mayle-pants_152_130.jpgWhy should kids be the only benefactors of a new wardrobe come fall?

By Heather Summerville

When I was still in school, I looked forward to the two weeks before classes started all summer because it meant hours-long trips to the mall with my grandmother for new clothes. We'd rummage through the new fall magazines, tearing out pictures of shoes we liked or pants we wanted. Then we'd hit every store in Atlanta looking for cheaper versions of what we'd found. (Clearly, this is where I inherited my shopping habit!)

Camping for Wussies

S.Lucky.Camping_bed_153_130.jpg

A nature-phobic city girl finds her way into the wild--sort of.

There are few things I hate more than camping. I love the outdoors--fishing, kayaking, perhaps a nice nature walk--but at the end of the day I want a hot shower and a soft bed. Yes, I know, this admission renders me dangerously close to being classified as high-maintenance, but I've tried it enough times to know camping's just not for me.

Denim Fever

S.Lucky.MiH jeans-152x130.jpgThe newest cuts, washes, and lengths I love.

By Heather Summerville

Once a year, a wonderful thing happens at the Lucky offices: the hallways and most of the fashion closet are overrun with racks and racks of denim--we're talking over a thousand pairs. And no matter how hard I try to ignore their somewhat overwhelming existence, I inevitably break down and have to try on a pile of jeans.

Up until now, after I located a pair that fit I'd search high and low for a store where I could actually buy them. But this year, our Web team compiled a sourcebook of really great denim sites that I've saved to my Web thumbnails--and end up looking at almost daily since it was posted.

Summertime Sniffles

sick_woman.jpgLooking cute while sick? It's possible...almost.

It's inevitable: Every summer, I get a cold. Not just a sniffle-cough scenario, but a full-blown in-bed-for-days-with-a-fever illness. This year, it hit as I was en route to L.A. for our most recent cover shoot. By the time I made it to my hotel room, all I wanted was comfy pajamas, a warm blanket, and my mom. Sadly, none of these things were in my suitcase.

Standout Wedding Gifts

Huset-Blackbirds.jpgHunting for thoughtful presents in unexpected places.

By Heather Summerville

I'm completely ambivalent when it comes to wedding gifts. Half of me wants to play it safe and stick to the registry. The other half wants to branch out and find something a bit more personal. Over the last few months, I've put both methods to the test and come up with some great gift ideas that I hope will impress even the pickiest brides-to-be on my constantly growing list.

Skirting Around

skirt-Striped-Corey-header.jpg

I've become addicted to dresses (and jeans); here, I try to break the habit.

Along with just about every other girl I know, I've been basically living in dresses over the last few months. They're easy, like an instant outfit, and they always feel more affordable--since you're just buying one piece as opposed to separates. But I find myself wondering if I haven't gotten a wee bit lazy as I reach for dress after dress, day after day.

Shore Glamour

When hitting the beach isn't necessarily a low-key affair.

By Heather Summerville

I'm in the middle of packing for a quick trip to Miami. It may seem like an easy enough task--bikini, flip-flops, sunscreen, done--but weirdly, there's more to it than that. Unlike most beach towns, South Beach has turned taking it easy into a rather fabulous affair, where you see people having business lunches in their bathing suits and it's not at all odd to go straight from surfing to dinner.

Make It Rain

Seattle inspires a waterproof style statement.

By Heather Summerville

I've just spent the day wandering around Seattle for the first time. The views are stunning, the coffee endless, and the open market prolific. The weather, however, leaves a lot to be desired. But I really wasn't too disappointed, because without the afternoon drizzle I never would have spotted my newest fashion inspiration--leave it to the city that sees more clouds than sun to know how to make functional pieces look cool.
