Cost effective ways to show your dog that you care
By Beth J. Bates
Valentine's Day is right around the corner. And this year, more than ever, I am feeling the love from family, friends...and even my four special pups. February 14th has always been a big day for my husband and me. We typically go to an expensive dinner. Mark buys me roses and jewelry. In 2007, he proposed to me on Valentine's Day. It's a very special day.
This year with the economy in a downward spiral, we've decided to table our typical V-Day rituals for some at-home time. We may head out for a nice, romantic dinner. But the days of the $200 dinner tab are over.
I've read a lot of articles lately encouraging pet owners to buy extravagant gifts for their pets for Valentine's Day. But I think that its hard to ask folks to spend a lot of money on their pets for a holiday that was created by the greeting card companies.
So, this year, instead of giving you a laundry list of expensive pet products, I'm going to urge you to really "do" something for your own pets or other animals that may need your help.
Plan a 30-minute love fest. Set 30 minutes aside on Feb. 14 to really pay attention to your pets. Have 30 minutes of crazy playtime. Snuggle on the couch. The key is to really focus on your pet's needs...and how much you love them.
Bake a special treat. AllRecipes.com is one of my favorite places to go for easy recipes for my family. I've come to find that its also a great resource for dog treat recipes! Find a recipe that fits your dog's tastes. Consider using a heart shaped cookie cutter.
Give your pup a healthy massage. Massage not only provides stress relief but is also a wonderful way to bond with your pet. Pet massage is easy and will make your dog's day.
Take a "road" trip. Load your dog into the car and head out to your nearest park or hiking trail. Remember to bring plenty of water, dog treats and poop bags. Give your pup tons of love and attention during your outing. It's a great way to enjoy your dog as well as get some much needed exercise.
Make a donation. Giving is down this year and animal shelters need all the help they can get. Consider making a donation to your local animal shelter or humane society in your dog's name. It will make you feel good and it will help your shelter care for their dogs at a time when your help is desperately needed.
With a little creativity and some time, you can give your dogs what they really want for Valentine's Day - your attention and unconditional love.
