A “Soul”ful Wedding

My favorite part of our wedding day was watching all my guests break out their best moves on the Soul Train line…that was the one moment I got to look at my guests and really see them cut loose! They seemed to enjoy themselves! Oh, the, “you may now kiss the bride” part was pretty awesome too…my hubby looked SOOO handsome, and his kiss was PERFECT (as always)! Shouts out to my better half for being the bomb.com on our wedding day and always!

It took forever and a day to plan my wedding and if I could turn back the hands of time I would’ve paid someone to give a darn since I CLEARLY didn’t want to…planning a wedding is the most overwhelming thing I’ve ever had to do. DeBoris and I had been engaged for over a year before our big day, but it took about six months to really plan my wedding. Those were the longest six months of my existence! And when we renew our vows in 2020, I plan to hire the BEST event planner that money can buy – anyone interested in this position can submit their resumes and portfolios to me NOW! LOL, I’m just kidding…kind of!

If I could only change one thing about my wedding, I would change EVERYTHING (LOL). Truthfully though, there are about a million and one things that I didn’t really like about the details of my wedding…my hair wasn’t what I envisioned, nor was my dress, the little gifts for our guests were a flop, I never did get the aisle runner I wanted (and the person who sold the royal blue one to me refused to take it back…LOSERS) – I could go on and on. HOWEVER, despite all of those minor details, my wedding was the happiest day of my life…I had a great time and hope my guests had a good time as well. Okay but truthfully, if I could change ONE thing, I would’ve gone table to table to say hello and take pictures with my guests. Our photographer never suggested this and it didn’t even dawn on me until after the big day.

DeBoris and I went to the beautiful island of Jamaica for our honeymoon. It was awesome…most of the time. When we arrived, our hotel was supposed to send a shuttle for us. But when they FAILED to do so, we opted to stay at another resort that seemed more readily available to cater to our needs. We got in a teensy-weensy bit of an argument because I wanted to get out and explore the island while DeBoris wanted to sleep the day away EVERY DAY…I wanted to go to the beach, he wanted to go to dinner. I wanted to go to the night club, he wanted to go to dinner. I wanted to go shopping, he wanted to go (you guessed it) TO DINNER! I mean the all-you-can-eat, all inclusive buffet was awesome, but C’MON SON, CAN A SISTAH SPEAK SOME PATOIS WITH THE LOCALS? Anyway, we took lots of pics, got in some beach time (after he got tired of hearing me complain), we even won a few resort games. Halfway through our stay we decided to upgrade to a nicer resort – this was a HUGE ordeal because our first resort didn’t want to give me my money back for the remaining days. Thank goodness my mother was in town for my cousin’s wedding and she helped pay our way into the very upscale resort on the other side of the island. The end of our honeymoon was spent enjoying my cousin’s nuptials – it was nice to see someone else freaking out over their big day while I just got to sit back and relax!

It’s been 122 days since our big day, and I’m happy to report that married life is even better than I thought it would be. Not that I thought marriage wasn’t going to be great, I just figured life wouldn’t change much. However, being married has given me a sense of comfort that helps put things in perspective. Things I would’ve complained about before, I just brush off. After all, what good is a little argument going to do when we’re working on having a lifetime together? We pick our battles more wisely, and try to talk things out like adults. Now if I only I can get DeBoris to accept this, “happy wife, happy life” mindset I’ve been hearing so much about! Once I am able to get him to commit to that, we’ll be PERFECT!

One thing I WILL say though, is the honeymoon phase is NO JOKE. You spend days on end wanting to do nothing but lay around and gaze into each other’s eyes. With that being said, my bad to anyone who has YET to receive a thank you card. We love you all and PROMISE to get it together soon!

Children seem to be the HOT topic in the Brinkley household. DeBoris cannot WAIT to be a dad, and although the idea of having another DeBoris running around terrifies me at times, I think I better pop one out the ol’ oven before my eggs dry up! Our friends can’t wait to be aunts and uncles, babysitters and baby shower attendees. Our mothers, however, are in no rush to become grandmothers. Per my mother-in-law (and I quote), “we are divas, and we are WAY too fly to be walking around with strollers right now…give us a few years!” It’s up to God to make it happen when we’re ready.

But between you and I, America, we’re trying to time this pregnancy thing to happen during a summer break, but I’m not sure how it’s all going to work out. DeBoris just started a new, more demanding job, we’re moving to a new city (NYC, look out!), and I’ll be in law school in the fall! I don’t know how I’m going to look arguing a case with a baby bump! Hmm, maybe it’ll earn me some sympathy points with the jury or the judge! Anyway, we’ll see how it goes…but two things are for sure. One, DeBoris Jr. is going to be one attractive baby…ladies, hide your daughters! And two, I am going to be the most dramatic mother-to-be EVER! Can you say momzilla?!

Despite popular belief, Bridezillas are not insane, monster-like women! We are professionals, mothers, sisters, and just like every woman out there! So for all the haters, who get on Twitter, Facebook, etc. and bash us, remember SOMEONE loved us enough to put a ring on it, while a large percentage of you sit at home ALONE watching us be fabulous (insert finger snap and eye roll). But thanks for your patronage – without you (the haters) there could be no us (the entertaining, beautiful brides)! Putting your wedding on national TV is not easy – it gets VERY stressful at times. But it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something off the wall, so why not?

Now, I would like to take this opp to thank the people who made it happen:

  • DeBoris is the bomb.com – always has been, always will be!
  • My mom has the patience of a saint, and even if I thanked her a billion times, it still wouldn’t be enough. Mom, you are truly amazing. I love you.
  • Special thanks to my Aunty Faye- I don’t know how the day would’ve gone without her. With the exception of the veil incident (which made me want to die), she was awesome! Thanks Aunt Faye for always exemplifying style, grace and showing me what it is to have family who are always by your side!
  • The vendors who actually did their job – Mystic Dunes Resort, Westgate Resorts, Two Sisters Designs, DJ Kevy Kev, Melissa (make-up artist), you all did the darn thing!

And last but not least, a shout out to MYSELF (yep, me) for making it through. And God – He def gets a shout out for being AWESOME!
