I could not see the reason for Jim to die, as he is as much a main role character as Melinda. It was premature to kill him, even though he is supposed to be in another man's body (Sam) as we know each time Melinda looks at her husband, he is now physically different. That would be much harder for her to feel that same bond, even if Jim in the Sam body, had the same personality and was in essence 'Jim.'
:Melinda may still love the Jim, but it could have become an emotional relationship due to the body difference. As this is not supposed to be the handsome face and body of her departed husband, and only the personality, she would have to learn to fall in love with him all over again. The strange thing is, Melinda does not seem to have any problems with the different looking boidy.
