Only one African-American girl!

I am really tired of these reality shows casting one "token" African-American for their shows. If the casting directors or powers that be really want true diversity, they have to have more than one African-American in a lily white sea. Who wants to see all whites on mostly all television programs? I don't and will not be watching.

Re: Only one African-American girl! I feel the same way I am African American and being races but blacks as a majority are only in certain places. We really are a minority in the U.S. sure their are a lot in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Chicago, Detroit, Louisiana,Florida, parts of California, but girl that just how life is I am just glad that their is a sista on the show, even if I feel like her decision could have better thought out and she had a little more family support. I hope she doesn't have any regrets though.

Re: Only one African-American girl!
i am African-American too and i do agree with you on that topic but they went to Kansas and the girl already said that it wasn't a high population of African-American students at the school in the first place. I don't think thing races about this. On some shows i do see that and it is kind of annoying but in this situation i understand.

Re: Only one African-American girl! "eyez" - I agree with you that Allison deserved her own episode.

On the topic of there only being one African-American girl, perhaps one of the reasons is there were only 40 girls who submitted applications to be on this show. Out of that only 15 got interviewed and only 12 made the cut. So if you figure that the school has 1200 students, there are probably 400 per grade and only half of them are girls (probably). 20% of those girls applied and only 30% of them got on the show. Factor in their location and I think the odds are about right.

Re: Only one African-American girl! I completely agree! The thing that irritated me about them having just the one is they stuffed her story in with 2 other girls. By far her 4 years of getting pregnant, having an abortion AND having her father pass away on TOP of being black in Kansas should have given her a solo episode. Her experience of being one of the few spots in her entire high school indicates that her exeperience would be vastly different from the other girls. I can't belive that the one girl who's sister got pregnant got a solo episode and Allyson did not. Boooo WE BOOOOOOO.

Re: Only one African-American girl! Having gone to a high school in the same district as NW, I can easily say that I am not at all surprised there's only one African-American girl. Asians are the largest minority in Overland Park. There are, quite possibly, somewhere around forty African-Americans in my school. That may be a low estimate, given the size of my school... but I don't think I've even ever been in a class with more than one African-American in it my whole high school experience. So, yeah, it's representative of the area. There's no diversity here.

Re: Only one African-American girl! I live in Overland Park, where this series was filmed, and I don't see that many black people. When I found out there was only one girl of minority on the show, I had the same reaction as you. However, when I thought about how many black people I've seen walking around, I realised why there was only one black girl on the show. The probably chose her so the nation could see what it's like for a black girl growing up in a predominantly white area. If you cared as much as you let on, you'd watch the show to hear her story. I know I'll be watching, as I grew up in a predominantly white area, so I understand.

Re: Only one African-American girl!
There aren't a lot of black people in KC. I grew up in the KC area and moved to the East and noticed a huge difference.

Re: Only one African-American girl! i understand what your saying, but forgive me if i'm wrong.. but i honestly don't think there are a lot of african americans in kansas. When i lived in New Jersey, there was only 2 or 3 black kids in my class, only because the area that i lived in. But when i moved down to South Carolina, over half my class was black. I don't think it's to be raciest, it's just that there are different demographics for different areas of race in the country. Perhaps if you went to Chicago you might have a Polish kid, which i would love to see being that i'm Polish. Sorry to say you don 't see a last name like mine everday :P
I hope that may at least help some.
