Wedding Budget Blues

I've watched quite a few shows about weddings and while they're all quite nice to watch I find myself shaking my head at all of the extravagance and expense. Yes, most of us want a fairy tale wedding where we are Cinderella and marrying our Prince Charming, but I'd love to see more shows that show you how to have the wedding of your dreams without spending a fortune. I live in Southern California and my fiance and I would like to have a beach themed wedding with good food and dance with our friends, but now we're talking about limiting our guest list to 25 in order to keep the budget down. Most of the venues I've looked at have a Food and Beverage minimum anywhere from $7,000 to $15,000, then you still have to pay for the photographer, starting at $2K; the Videographer, another $2K; the florist, $2K; the dress, $1-2K; party favors, tax and gratuity 18-21%, etc. It's an industry out to captilize on what's supposed to be a joyous occassion, but rather puts us in bankruptcy court before the honeymoon. Please please please network producers give us some help with our personal budget crisis and show us how to cut costs without cutting quality.

Re: Wedding Budget Blues
Can I ask where you found a destination wedding in FL for $5,000? I feel overwhelmed with trying to find a venue that fits into our budget and when I saw your email about how much cheaper it would have been to have it in FL, I just had to ask. Any info you might have to help me would be much appreciated!

Re: Wedding Budget Blues to enterpriselady:
I just don't know what to tell you, LOL!!!
The show that you are talking about is Platnum Weddings, I have watched the two shows that you are talking about sever times and I must say that I do laugh at the amount of money that thay spent.
HOWEVER!
You do have a little point to all the charity stuff you were talking about, but on the flip side of it all.....
Thay had the money!!! and this is what thay wanted, and how would we know if thay already send to charitys?
The show is about WEDDINGS.....
Not what I do with my MILLONS.
So my edvise to you.
Site back and enjoy someone eles spending MILLONS.

Re: Wedding Budget Blues
I tell you what if you have a long time to plan you can really save money. For instance, I am getting married next year. I am a very craft orinated person so here are the ways I have saved LOTS so far....and really anyone can do it.

My flowers (fake) I made the bouts, bouques, glower girl baskets and anything else related for $50 dollars.

Then I went to Michales and AC Moore every now and again to check cleance stuff. I fount a not so great guest book on sale for $5.00 and bought White Satin material and made a book cover and with the extra made a matching ring b. pillow.....

I made my veil and matching flower girl veils for $7.00 they have gem work all over it...

The key thing you can look at is what your colors are and what holidays have those colors and buy stuff when it goes on sale....
And let me tell you if my colors were red I would have had it all dirt cheap buying valentinesday sale stuff hahha....

I will be posting my pic. of everything event. if anyone is interested and if you have any questions you can email me @ Stupunka_design@yahoo.com.....Does not cost a thing just hear to help.

Re: Wedding Budget Blues I hope to not be deleted with my post. I am shocked at the materialistic overkill shown on this program. Namely, the one show featuring the Brownstone as the place of the wedding.

I was disgusted by the waste of money. There are too many people in our country that are starving and struggling just to live. What makes these people think they deserve to spend money on themselves like this? I can tell you. They obviously think they are better than anyone else.

What are they doing to help others? How do they justify their wasteful spending? They, obviously, are not thinking about the consequences, nor about anything or anyone else except their own greed.

For these reality show individuals, it seems that no amount of money in the world can ever make them truly happy...and for all of us watching this display of money squandering, they are really feeding on the side of glutens.

I bet they wouldnt think for two seconds of taking the money they blew on their weddings, matching it, and donating it cancer research.

These people care about nothing but themselves. It's so shameful and conceited. I am horrified at their wasteful spending.

I am disgusted seeing these people expecting to get whatever at whom ever's expense. The greed of these participants on the show is very distasteful.

I cannot believe how these people think they are better than everybody else. If they dont think that, that is, at least, the way they come off. I want this I want that.. too excessive.

I cannot believe there are actually people like this out there, conceited as all get out and can never have enough.

The Wedding with Tammy, while both she and her finance on the show are CEO's of high profile companies, we also know that these individuals are the same people who should be using their wealth to help others instead of spending that type of money for a wedding.

Why is it that these people did not talk about what they would do for other people...while simultaneously talking about what they were going to spend on themselves. .. The comments of the frends, were 'oh wow' when they were told Tammy purchased 3 wedding gowns. Earings $21K? are you joking me? It's people like that that need to be stripped of their wealth and made to go live for 31 days on the Survivor islands. .. get a little humble, would you? Very sad to have seen this.

I hope that when these people pass on to the after life they may have some feelings of remorse for how they've neglected to use their wealth in giving to others instead of feeding themselves showing their complete and utter greed.

Re: Wedding Budget Blues Hi my name is E and I understand where you are coming from 100%. I have been searching online in order to find all of the things I want for my wedding and I have alot of things a a great deal. I looked into renting a hall and doing all of the decorating and things myself. I also want to make the food myself with my family members just because it will keep my budget down. You can look at this website called orientaltrading.com and they have alot of wedding stuff really cheap. I hope all works out for you in order to have your fairy tale wedding.

Re: Wedding Budget Blues Well last night on Rich Bride Poor Bride, they had a couple who started out with a budget of about $12,000. However by the time they were done they ended up spending about $19,000. I think it's definitely possible.

Re: Wedding Budget Blues I so agree with you. The reason I spend so much time watching all these wedding shows is to get ideas on how to have a beautiful and elegant wedding, but without putting ourselves in debt. The sad thing is that these weddings are either to tacky and cheap or over the top and expensive, I guess it's base on location. We have set our budget at $15k and beleive it or not 1/3 of that is being spent on the reception based on 127 guest.
In the begining we had wanted to do a destination wedding to FL, I wish we had stuck to that plan it would have cost us only $5k. Thanks to the internet, google, EBAY, craigs list and word of mouth I have been able to keep all my other cost down.

Re: Wedding Budget Blues

Well here is what we did to cut costs, though not all for just that reason we liked alot of the items we did cause it made things a bit different.

My bridesmaids carried wooden fans that I glued ribbons to. The corsages were simple for the guys, one calla lily for the guys and different kinds for moms, readers and grandmas.

We had a small cake to cut and then cupcakes for the guests. They were decorated with glitter and a chocolate heart wrapped in a foil that was close to our wedding color. I think they came out to $1 a piece or so. We got tons of compliments on this.

For centerpieces we used our party favors, wonderfuls I believe is the name. There were a number of options for the filling. My sister also made chocolate suckers for the place settings.

We also ended the reception at 10pm to save on alcohol and DJ. And I know everyone hears bad things about Davids but I had a great experience with them and got a gorgeous dress for $700. You can also look at bridesmaid dresses and prom dresses for a cheaper bridal gown depending on what you want.

The photographer is well worth the money because its the only thing you have left after its all over. Just make sure you think hard about what pics you want beforehand and give the list to a trusted person. I never got one of me and my brothers or me and all my siblings except for the whole group pics.
