Bios

Angela

Angela has been a part of LaVar Hair Design for over two years. She specializes in cuts, color, and basic hairstyles. Originally from Vallejo, California, Angela's been doing hair for about fifteen years. Angela likes to purposely give Ellin attitude and a hard time because she knows it drives Ellin crazy and loves to see her reaction.

Chioma

Chioma has been with LaVar Hair Design for about three years. Chioma can cut, color, and weave hair, but she also helps Jeff with the management of the salon and considers herself the director of human resources. Chioma is married with three children, all under the age of four. She loves what she does, but her family is her number one priority.

Ellin

Ellin LaVar owns LaVar Hair Design. She's been doing her own hair since she could raise her hands over her head, started doing her family's hair not much later, became a professional and had her first magazine article written about her, in Essence, when she was around fifteen. Most people think of her as a braider, then a weaver, and lastly a stylist. She thinks her whole staff is beautiful, wonderful, talented stylists and she still hasn't learned to expect the unexpected.

Jeff

Jeff is Ellin's younger brother and works at the salon when he's not busy with his full time job as a math teacher, running a young men's mentoring ministry, tutoring, or singing in his church's choir. He considers himself "the cleaner" at the salon, when there's a problem of any sort; he's there to clean it up.

Kim

Kim is Ellin's younger sister and has been working at LaVar Hair Design on and off for seventeen years. She's been fired nineteen times, and hired twenty. Kim specializes in take outs, washes hair, and consults with clients. Kim doesn't hold anything back and is very outspoken, but when she's wrong, she'll be the first to admit it.

Yvonne

Yvonne has been a client of Ellin's for thirty years, and has been working at the salon's front desk for almost three years. She does a little bit of everything, making appointments, answering the phone, payroll, and other miscellaneous things. If it doesn't involve hair, she does it. Yvonne's been happily married for 25 years.

Little

Little is Ellin's half-sister and has been working at LaVar Hair Design since 2006. She has a full time job as a math teacher and works the front desk during evenings and on Saturdays. She makes sure clients are properly booked, calls vendors, makes sure clients are happy, and cleans up Yvonne's mess. She has three daughters, and her outlook on life is "don't sweat the small stuff."

Tawana

Tawana first met Ellin during her thirty-day trial at LaVar Hair Designs. Ellin must have been impressed by Tawana's skill - she was hired and has been working there for over nine months. Tawana specializes in cutting, coloring, and restoring damaged hair. Even though she thinks everyone at LaVar Hair Designs is crazy, she loves the variety of people surrounding her.

Marcia

Marcia has been styling hair for about sixteen years. She first met Ellin while working at another salon - Ellin knew she was talented and brought her to LaVar. Marcia's favorite part of being a stylist is making people feel good about themselves, making people look beautiful, and meeting new people.

Shannon

Shannon is 34 years old and just started working at LaVar Hair Design. A career change at the age of 29 led her to beauty school, and ended up at LaVar by chance. She loves that everyone is there to have fun, make people happy, and work hard. She's single and looking, so if you're into positive, high energy girls, give her a call.

Marilyn

Marilyn has been at LaVar Hair Design for over three years, although she's been a hair dresser for over forty years. She's both a stylist and a hair colorist. The thing Marilyn loves most about her job is making people feel good about themselves. Besides being a talented stylist, she's proud of the BA in Art and Psychology that she earned. She's been happily married for 25 years.

Mist

Mist has been at LaVar Hair Design for over three years, but has been doing hair for over seventeen years. She specializes in weaves, but can also do perms, curls, cuts, color, and anything else. Mist is one of the chosen ones, one of the two stylists to whom Ellin has taught her technique. Although celebrities frequent the salon, Mist considers anyone who comes in with a working credit card a celebrity and treats everyone equally.

Mina

Mina is originally from Colombia and has been happily married for twelve years. She's known Ellin for two years, and they immediately clicked while she was interviewing for her position. At LaVar Hair Design she does skin care, permanent make up, facials, eyelashes, microdermabrasion, and is always looking to learn something new.

Zafia

Zafia, better known as Z, is the newest addition to LaVar Hair Designs. An aspiring singer, Z has learned to humble herself while assisting the stylists with anything they need and ensuring that the clients are comfortable and happy. Z loves working at LaVar Hair Designs because she learns a lot from both the culturally diverse clients, and Ellin. She's hoping to stay at LaVar for the foreseeable future - unless she gets a record deal.
