5 Do’s for a Destination Wedding

If your dream wedding includes visions of packing a bag and heading to a beautiful location that is far away from home, you’re certainly not alone.

“From the beaches of the Caribbean to the vineyards in Napa, destination weddings are growing in popularity now more than ever,” says David Tutera, celebrity wedding planner and host of WEtv’s My Fair Wedding: Unveiled. “The amount of fun that goes along with a traveling wedding is paralleled by the variables and planning.”

So, as you choose your dream destination, keep these five simple tips in mind.

DO make sure to check the local weather for your anticipated time of year,” states David. “Don’t just assume the weather is the same all year round!”

For example, if you’re headed for the Rocky Mountains, you need to make sure you don’t need a
snowplow for you and your guests to get there! And if the ceremony will be taking place outside near
water, do check for high and low tides and the phase of the moon. You don’t want your ceremony to get
washed out!

DO place a ‘Welcome Bag’ in each guests room containing items like a local map, a weekend itinerary, a sweet and a salty snack, a bottle of water and a useful item, such as a sunblock or a cozy blanket,” suggests David.

And along these lines, try not to overplan or underplan your guests’ time. Give them downtime to explore
the destination themselves. You should also find out if there is nightlife for them and activities if they
choose to turn your wedding into a vacation.

“DO factor in travel costs for family and friends,” advises David. “It’s important to be practical about who may not be able to attend due to budget (or time off of work or away from small children, for that matter) and about their limitations when it comes to gifts (considering the parties and showers leading up to your wedding).”

One way to keep the cost down is to avoid a destination that requires two forms of transportation. Things may come out being costly—and confusing—for them and for you. And after all, you want the best turnout possible. – excerpt from David’s book, The Big White Book of Weddings

“DO travel to this location ahead of time to personally visit the wedding venue and meet your local vendors,” says David.
And keep in mind that the more remote your destination will be, the more expensive it will be to import your vendors, foods, florals and other elements you need to provide. Shipping long distances can also take up time and require extra planning for on-time arrivals. – excerpt from David’s book, The Big White Book of Weddings

DO select fashion, hair and makeup, florals and decor that best reflect of the location you’ve chosen for a cohesive and beautiful celebration,” states David.

And since beach weddings are so popular, I must add not to mix sand and heels! Trade the stilettos for elegant flip-flops, go barefoot or keep the high heels and install a platform for your ceremony stage and your aisle for the comfort and ease of the people in the processional. – excerpt from David’s book, The Big White Book of Weddings
