Dogs, cats, pigs, white lions—sweet and lovable as they are—rarely match the market value of a champion steed. In November 2008, the dam of back-to-back Belmont Stakes winners Jazil and champion Rags to Riches fetched a staggering $14 million at the Fasig-Tipton November auction in Lexington, Ky.—a record price for a broodmare (a mare used for breeding).

Asked why he spent so much on Better Than Honour, buyer Michael Moreno of Southern Equine Stables told reporters, “She’s the best mare in the world…. She’s a Picasso.” And she has the price tag to prove it.
