Heroic Deed: Saved her caregiver from a gunman
The Story: When Will Bartley of Northern California came home one afternoon in January 2007, his 7-year-old German shepherd Buffy greeted him—but a gunman demanding money approached him as well. Even though Bartley handed over his wallet, the gunman wanted more. Buffy lunged at the man, who shot her in the leg. But she wouldn't go down easy, chasing the gunman down the street until he disappeared. In spite of a successful surgery, Buffy eventually had to be euthanized to ease her pain and suffering as a result of the gunshot wound. But she didn't die in vain: The Humane Society honored her with a posthumous Dog of the Year award.
