Heroic Deed: Called 911 to save owner
The Story: Because of her mobility issues, Adrian McKee of Big Bear City, Calif. lives with a service dog named Pearl. One day, McKee fainted. Pearl nudged her neck to revive her, but it didn't work. So, the Great Dane mix knocked the phone off the hook and pawed the emergency buttons. When the 911 Operator heard no one on the other line, an ambulance was immediately dispatched to the house. But, Pearl still had more tricks up her sleeve. Being a Great Dane mix, Pearl's imposing size had frightened paramedics before. This time, she ran out to greet the ambulance crew with a ball in her mouth so they'd see she was playful. Like Anna [see slide 5], Pearl was also named a Humane Society Dog of Valor finalist.
