When Uno, a 15-inch beagle, first took the stage at the 2008 Westminster Kennel Club dog show, the crowd took an instant liking to him. Spunky, confident and cute, Uno also had serious underdog appeal—no beagle had ever won the competition. Set against an imposing Tibetan Mastiff, a Sealyham terrier and an impressive standard poodle, Uno had serious competition.
Yet, the judges—like the roaring crowds—were absolutely smitten with him. “He’s the most perfect beagle I’ve ever seen,” best in show judge Dr. J. Donald Jones said. “If you saw him, you saw that perfectly smooth locomotion. Not one muscle went the wrong way. Look at his face, you melt right down.” How has Uno’s life changed since February? He rode in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, met the President, and threw out the first pitch at two major league baseball games.
