"I volunteered at the Harlem Community Kitchen during their dinner service on Wednesday. My group was a small one -- but we had a GREAT time. Everyone was friendly and so appreciative of us being there. We got to serve dinner to many working poor in Harlem who rely on the kitchen for their meals every day. The time flew by and before we knew it the time had come to go home. Some of the regular volunteers told us to thank everyone at WE tv, since we were the last group. And, they wanted to know when we'd be back!"

This experience was a reminder of how simple items such as markers, art supplies, musical instruments and even books are "extras" in so many schools across the nation. Donors Choose has a novel approach to simply giving teachers and students the items they need to enrich their learning experiences.

Walked the entire 10K AIDS Walk New York for the first time, and raised funds.

At "My Sister's House" a safe place for women and their children in downtown Atlanta, GA - I typed resumes that were then printed and saved on a disk. Met some great women that have a lot of obstacles to overcome in order to return to the workplace (transportation, childcare, clothing, no HS diploma, etc.).

My mother was diagnosed with cancer in fall of 2007, she lost her battle with the disease in May of 2008. During her illness she prided herself on the lovely wig she was able to get, always feeling and looking beautiful even when she was sick. I decided to start growing my hair so that I could donate it to another woman like my mother- allowing her to feel beautiful even in the midst of illness. I cut off 10in of my hair on my mother's birthday in order to honor her and help others :)

I've been participating in this event for 7 years now. Am proud of how many people come together for this cause.

Everyone at the kitchen was very nice. They kept us on our toes. We were working hard every minute. Another male volunteer even mentioned that he liked watching Women Behind Bars and Bridezillas.

It was more fun than I expected. That was my first volunteer experience, and I will not forget it.

I realized the area in upstate NY wear I live, there weren't any programs to help the many teen parents in the area that were expecting or already had babies. I started a program from my home that helps teen parents with clothing, furniture, diapers, and statying in school, applying for jobs, college, etc. It's free to all teens that need help. I don't have grants or monitary donations, so if I need to buy things for the teens, I pay for it myself. I go online to local free sites to get donations of items and set up a website for the program too. I do this from my attic. I love every minute of it!

I have been volunteering 5 days a week for the past year with the Disabled American Veterans chapter near where I live. I am the adjutant for the chapter and have met literally hundreds of fascinating people. I love the job as I get to help other disabled vets. Yes, I too, am a disabled vet. It is only by paying forward can we ever hope to fill our own cups of hope.
