Driven by her passion to empower women and to spread the Natural Hair Movement, Mushiya is quickly taking over the hair game – in Atlanta and the world at large. Mushiya is not just a stylist, she’s an activist.
Raised in Congo, Mushiya learned to do hair from her mother. This skill, along with her entrepreneurial spirit, funded Mushiya’s college education in Montreal. She later bought a house in Atlanta and started The Damn Salon in her kitchen with nothing but a chair, a comb and a goal: City Twists. Today, the signature style marks a turning point in the history of the “natural hair movement.”
Mushiya invented and trademarked several natural styling techniques and rapidly built a cult following. She is often invited as an expert for panels, focus groups and seminars and has been featured in national magazines such as Ebony, Upscale, Sophisticated Black Hair, and documentaries.
With the continued support of her husband Lou, Mushiya has established two Damn Salon locations in Atlanta and Charlotte, as well as a line of natural hair care products. She is also the founder and creative director for her own hair line “Runway Curls” offering a variety of textures to match the natural textures of the hair. Mushiya’s techniques are designed to celebrate high fashion and naturally textured hair without the use of heat or chemicals, which not only damage hair, but are harmful to the body and the environment.
