Season 1, Episode 1
“No Voice, No Choice”
Cyndi heads to LA to perform on “The Voice.” One problem, she’s lost hers. Will an unconventional vocal lesson, lunch with friend Kathy Griffin, and a special night with her family be enough to help her get ready for the big show?
In the premiere episode of Cyndi Lauper: Still So Unusual, Cyndi heads to Los Angeles to perform on the prestigious show “The Voice”. But life at home doesn’t stand still because she has to work; there are still mouths to feed, dogs to walk, and of course a sink full of dirty dishes.
Before Cyndi jets to LA, she heads into New York City for a lesson with her longtime vocal coach Katie Agresta. Katie and Cyndi work through odd vocal exercises and one thing becomes clear - Cyndi’s voice, due to a lack of sleep, is not in the condition it should be for a live performance in front of 12 million viewers. Can she really go on “The Voice” without a voice?
In LA, Cyndi and her manager Lisa head to rehearsal. Cyndi meets Season One Finalist Beverly McClellan who has chosen Cyndi to be her duet partner. Determined to do well for Beverly, Cyndi gives it her all during rehearsal despite having technical issues. Unfortunately, her voice is now in even worse shape for the big night.
After a frustrating sound check, Cyndi sneaks in some girl time with her pal Kathy Griffin. As the two funny ladies dish about their lives they are soon interrupted by a phone call from Cyndi’s son, Declyn. Kathy quickly hijacks the call and puts Declyn in the hot seat. Or maybe it’s the other way around…
As Declyn and Cyndi’s husband David arrive in Los Angeles, Cyndi has high hopes for a great family night. But her dreams are dashed when her guys arrive hungry, tired and more interested in the hockey game than spending quality time together.
Finally, the day of “The Voice” performance is here. Still nervous and dealing with an almost completely blown-out voice, Cyndi is tense. As the time comes to step out on stage, Cyndi must figure out how to get it together in order to perform live while her family watches anxiously backstage.
