Laura informs Todd that they owe $25,000 in medical fees, since insurance isn’t covering Rex’s asthma bill. Todd is broken hearted, his dreams of owning a home dashed again. Laura is struggling with the new financial burden and is especially emotional because it is the 10th anniversary of her mom’s death. After meeting with Dean, their financial advisor, Todd and Laura realize they now have to buckle down and tell the kids the house is off.
In hope of earning money to help the family Whitney decides to perform at an open mic at the local coffee shop. By performing publically she hopes to move forward with a singing career that will earn some money for her self and the family.
Meanwhile, Todd finds out that Levi has earned two D’s on his report card and is furious. He puts Levi on backyard clean-up duty to show him what life is like without a degree.
If things are not bad enough, Laura’s beloved Mercedes breaks down. While Todd tries to repair it, Laura gets the “privilege” of driving Levi’s big, muddy truck to work – an arrangement that embarrasses Laura and Levi is none to happy about.
Just when things seem to stabilize, Laura gets the heartbreaking news that her beloved car isn’t even worth the cost to fix it. Laura is devastated as she watches the car that belonged to her late mother get towed away. In a tearful goodbye she let’s go not only of the Mercedes but also her mother.
The loss of the Mercedes. The loss of a house. The mounting bills. All this puts a strain on Todd and Laura’s marriage. And after a knock-down-drag-out fight over parenting, right in front of the kids, the youngest of all, Danielle, begins to wonder; Could this blended family be coming apart?
