Whitney's insecurities make it difficult for her parents to teach her. Whitney feels like she can't do anything right when Laura corrects her and this escalates into a fight. To make matters worse the transmission on the van gives out while they are driving home. Bailey goes out on her first date with the boy she likes at school, and Todd doesn't get the best first impression of him.
Todd arranges to barter for Danielle's braces and Laura sells enough old jewelry to almost cover driving school so it seems the family's financial situation is improving. Until Todd gets swindle by a transmission company and that ends up costing the family thousands of dollars. With the van out of commission and needing a vehicle for work Todd spends the rest of the emergency fund on a truck. Laura is shocked that Todd bought the truck without telling her.
