Don’t Go Breaking My Heart
The gang throws a party for Niles when he returns home after his heart surgery. After his brush with death, Niles talks about his new zeal for life and his determination to make the most of every moment. Roz finds it odd that Frasier is suddenly agreeable with his brother and Frasier admits that he made a deal with God before the operation—if Niles pulls through, he won’t argue with him anymore.
Even though Niles has permission to resume normal activity, he avoids his favorite foods, hobbies and even refrains from being intimate with Daphne. Frasier’s inability to argue with his brother wears on his patience, especially when Niles calls the radio show to critique his advice. Frasier manages to bite his tongue because he is convinced that God will punish him if he doesn’t keep his promise.
Martin finally confronts Niles about his overcautious behavior by telling him he’s not embracing life, but running from it out of fear—just like Martin did when he was shot. Niles realizes that Martin is right and decides to start taking chances again. Meanwhile, Frasier finds out that Daphne also made a deal with God the night of Niles’ surgery that she would spend more time helping the less fortunate if Niles came through. Frasier reasons that as long as Daphne holds up her end of the bargain, he can return to yelling at his brother.
With his newfound freedom, Niles rushes home eager to spend a romantic evening with Daphne...and mistakenly jumps into bed with his mother-in-law!
