Maris Returns
Maris calls Niles at work in a panic, asking him to meet her for lunch. He agrees and later reports back to Frasier and Martin that she is stuck in a bad relationship with a violent, Argentinean polo player. They warn Niles not to tell Daphne since she is emotional and pregnant, but he refuses to lie. However, before Niles can come clean, Daphne intercepts a call from Maris, which leads to a string of far-fetched lies. His story leads Daphne to believe that that he’s throwing her a surprise baby shower that night.
With two hours to plan, Niles recruits everyone he can to attend the shower, including Frasier’s co-workers and the doorman. The caterer puts a snag in their plans when he confuses fraternity with maternity and sends over three kegs of beer and a hoagie. Daphne is puzzled by the guest list and questions Niles’ selection process. While Niles hyperventilates in the kitchen, the polo player shows up and clocks Frasier, mistaking him for Niles. Daphne discovers the truth and storms out. She later returns and Niles promises to never let Maris come between them again. Just then, a news report states that Maris was arrested for murdering her lover.
Meanwhile, Frasier’s hopeful expectations of returning to private practice are shattered by a string of disastrous and short sessions; including his chair malfunctioning and falling on top of an attractive blonde. Just when he’s about to throw in the towel, a last minute walk-in legitimizes his return.
