Frasier’s Edge
The concept of receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award plunges Frasier into a major depression.
Initially, Frasier is delighted to learn he’s been tapped for special recognition at the upcoming SeaBee Awards. He’s also touched to receive congratulatory flowers from Dr. William Tewksbury, his former Harvard mentor, who’s in town on sabbatical. Yet, after scrutinizing the wording of Tewksbury’s gift card, Frasier feels compelled to meet with him en route to the awards ceremony.
Puzzled by Frasier’s intensely analytical reaction to the note, Tewksbury confesses that his assistant actually composed it, then presses Frasier to explore what’s really bothering him. Meanwhile, over at the SeaBees, Roz gossips with Martin about Daphne’s recent weight gain, and KACL restaurant critic, Gil Chesterton, is aghast at being shut out of an award.
Back at Tewksbury’s office, Frasier writes off his blues as a midlife crisis. But, during a role-playing game, he realizes that the award reminds him that his life is pretty empty, despite his professional success. Arriving late to the SeaBees, Frasier stuns the crowd by accepting the honor, mumbling a few cryptic words, then walking out, leaving Roz to remark, “What the hell was that?”
