Cheerful Goodbyes
Frasier reunites with his buddies from “Cheers.”
Seattle’s top radio shrink returns to Boston to address a psychiatric convention. Joining him for the trip are Niles, who will introduce Frasier at the conference, as well as Martin and Daphne. Upon arrival, Frasier bumps into one of his former “Cheers” bar mates, Cliff Clavin (Special Guest Star John Ratzenberger), who mistakenly assumes that Frasier has flown in for his retirement party.
Not wanting to hurt Cliff’s feelings, Frasier agrees to attend the event. Niles is furious – they’ve only got one free night in Boston and they had planned to dine at an exclusive French restaurant. Reluctantly, Niles joins Frasier, Martin and Daphne at Cliff’s party, where Frasier is given a hearty welcome by Carla (Special Guest Star Rhea Perlman), Norm (Special Guest Star George Wendt) and other regulars from the bar.
Daphne finds Cliff’s wealth of useless facts fascinating, while Martin and Norm bond over their mutual love of beer. Niles only perks up when he discovers that Norm and Carla have dozens of humiliating stories to tell about Frasier. After Cliff confides in Frasier that he’s sure no one will miss him once he moves to Florida, Frasier convinces the guests to salute Cliff with heartfelt toasts. They all do, except for Carla, who confesses that she hates Cliff and can’t wait for him to leave town. Moved by his friends’ kind words – and assuming that Carla’s only kidding – Cliff decides to stay in Boston, to Carla’s horror!
