The Proposal
Niles plans to “pop the question” – and he’s pulling out all the stops to make it the greatest night of Daphne’s life.
Frasier and Martin accompany Niles to the jewelry store, where he finds the “perfect” ring for Daphne. Niles composes the “perfect” proposal, but cries every time he rehearses it, so Roz edits it for him. That evening, Niles and Frasier ply Martin with wine so that he’ll agree to keep Daphne’s mother occupied while Niles proposes. Martin agrees to take her out, but during the discussion, he lets it slip that Frasier’s mother was pregnant with him when they got married. Frasier is horrified by the revelation.
Niles’ and Daphne’s big night arrives. While Niles prepares for Daphne’s arrival, Martin distracts Mrs. Moon by taking her on a ferry ride. She assumes he’s trying to seduce her. To get her off his back, Martin fabricates a story about an injury that has left him impotent. Unbeknownst to him, his comment is overheard by Peg, a co-worker he likes, who walks away looking aghast!
Niles flies in celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck to make the proposal dinner, then proceeds to annoy Puck by picking on his cooking. Frasier is there to help coordinate the choir, string quartet and doves Niles has hired for the occasion. Unfortunately, Daphne shows up with a terrible case of the flu. At first, Niles decides to postpone the proposal until she’s feeling better, and Frasier manages to sneak everyone out before Daphne sees them. But in the end, Niles realizes that he doesn’t need any of the hoopla to make the night special. He simply asks Daphne to marry him and she joyously accepts.
