The Return Of Martin Crane
Martin’s new job triggers flashbacks of the fateful incident that ended his career as a cop.
Frasier decides to throw a little party to celebrate Martin’s first night as a parttime security guard. Niles arrives with a surprise for Daphne: he scored two tickets to see her favorite singer, Billy Joel, in concert. She surprises him with a pair of passes to the Mongolian Music Festival he wants to attend. Unfortunately, both events are set for that evening. To Daphne’s relief, Niles agrees to give his tickets to Frasier.
Seeing his father in uniform again, Niles worries that Martin’s new job could dredge up “buried memories” of the past. Martin scoffs at the suggestion, saying he vividly recalls the day he was shot in the hip after walking in on a convenience store robbery. However, the recollection does release a flood of memories about Martin’s strained relations with his sons prior to the shooting.
As Martin prepares to leave for work, he’s annoyed when Frasier, Niles, Daphne and Roz all claim they’re too busy to walk Eddie for him. While they argue, Martin remembers how his former partner, Frank, made a point of kissing his kids goodbye before starting his shift. Martin also recalls Frank urging him to nurture his relationship with Frasier and Niles. Back in the present, Martin angrily orders his sons to shut up and stop squabbling over Eddie. Then, to their amazement, Martin leans over to kiss Frasier and Niles on his way out the door.
