War Of The Words
Frasier’s son, Frederick, is accused of cheating.
The Crane family couldn’t be more proud of Freddy, who’s flown in from Boston to compete in the National Spelling Championship. Frasier spends hours coaching his son, while Niles advises his nephew not to get caught up in the “glitz and glamour of the bee.” Freddy learns that Niles was once the youngest contestant to reach the finals, but left the stage before attempting to spell the prize-winning word.
At the competition, the match comes down to Freddy and Warren Clayton, though Freddy emerges victorious. However, the Cranes’ celebration is interrupted by a contest official, who tells Freddy he’s been accused of cheating. Apparently, Frasier unconsciously mouthed the spelling of the pivotal word along with Freddy. Although Freddy wasn’t watching his father at the time, the judges have decided to award the trophy to Warren Clayton.
A crestfallen Freddy refuses to attend the spelling bee banquet – until Niles tells him about his experience at the event. Everyone assumed Niles choked under pressure. In fact, Niles simply realized his spelling skill went beyond a mere championship, and he walked away, confident that he was “one with the higher truth that is spelling.” Knowing that he won fair and square, Freddy attends the dinner, where he punches Warren for calling Frasier a cheater. To vindicate himself, Freddy challenges Warren to a “spell-off,” and soon claims the trophy that was rightfully his all along.
