Jamie & David: MFW Season 2

Their weddings went off without a hitch with the help of David Tutera, and so did their honeymoon. We revisit the brides featured on My Fair Wedding and share pictures of their paradise. Plus, learn how you could have their honeymoon.

Jamie and David of MFW Season 2 escaped to a Mexican paradise for their honeymoon. They stayed at all-inclusive resort Dreams Tulum, went snorkeling in an underground cave, and visited the ruins at Tulum. Most romantic memory? Morning walks on the beach at sunset. All together now: Awwww.

Dreams: Punta Cana

How to have this honeymoon:Dreams all-inclusive luxury resorts are located throughout Mexico and in the Dominican Republic. Look for great deals in Cabo, Puerto Vallarta or Cancun. The DR may be slightly more expensive, though you can check for price cuts once the rainy season starts in October. When researching air, note that Jet Blue is now offering service to five locations in the Dominican Republic, while Virgin America just started San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta flights.

Kristi & Larry: MFW Season 2

Kristi (AKA “Kricket”) and Larry from the Season 2 premiere were perhaps our most adventurous honeymooners. They chose to go on a Panama cruise, making stops in Costa Rica, Colombia and several other countries along the way. They day tripped to a rain forest, held their breath as the giant cruise ship inched through the Gatun Locks, and on the last night, danced alone on the deck as the stars looked down.

“We may have been a little late to dinner,” says Kristi, “But it was worth it.”

Royal Caribbean: Jewel Of The Seas

How to have this honeymoon: Many cruise lines have opened up routes to the Panama Canal lately. Kristi and Larry traveled on the Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas, on a 12-day itinerary. This is a pretty good pick for young honeymooners. Other lines, including Lindblad Expeditions and Holland America, also travel to Panama, but the itineraries are slightly longer, the demographic older, and the price point higher. Note that if you plan on going, it should be sometime between November, when the rainy season ends, and April, the end of Panama cruise season.

Caroline & Rob: Season 2

How’s this for a happy next chapter: Season 2 couple Caroline and Rob were a couple days late sending in honeymoon pics because they were off to the hospital right after her interview to have their second baby. We know the sparkle princess now has some adorable new baby photos to add to the family collection—but first, let’s check out the newlyweds’ shots from the island of Aruba. Rob’s family made a gift of this Caribbean honeymoon, which Caroline loved from the second she got off the plane and felt the balmy spring air—so very much warmer than April on the East Coast.

Renaissance Aruba
How to have this honeymoon: Caroline and Rob stayed at Divi Aruba, a deluxe Caribbean all-inclusive right on a white sand beach. Special deals and honeymoon packages are usually offered on the resort’s Website. Other popular properties on the island include the Renaissance and the Westin . Note that this island has a high concentration of “big box” self-contained resorts. If you want something smaller and quieter than the Divi, try neighboring Bonaire, a former sister island of Aruba that has many boutique properties and similar Dutch cultural influences.

Varneka & Tony
Varneka and Tony went on a Bahamas cruise, starting off in Miami and then boarding a ship for a blissful few days of private island-hopping. Varneka’s gold run continued—imagine her joy at finding a Miami hotel with “GOLD columns and a GOLD lounge.” Once in the Bahamas, the happy couple shopped in Nassau, lunched at the famous Atlantis resort, and Tony went snorkeling with dolphins off the shore of a private island while Varneka watched.
The Bahamas

How to have this honeymoon: For people based on the East Cost, the Bahamas is a great “quick getaway” cruise destination. Most ships leave out of Miami, and staying there a few nights before or after the cruise can be like a “bonus honeymoon.” If you have time, escape to a sexy South Beach boutique like Hotel Victor or the Tides South Beach. If you’re just overnighting in Miami, the Doubletree Grand Biscayne Bay is a very comfortable self-contained resort right near the port, with bars and restaurants and several swimming pools. When choosing a cruise ship, you may want to go with Celebrity or Princess instead of more family-friendly lines like Disney and Carnival.
Nicole & Ted

Nicole O’Hara-Johnson and hubby Ted waited for a year before finally taking their honeymoon, but it was worth it. They stayed six nights at the Grand Hyatt Kauai, on the lushest and most romantic of the Hawaiian islands. To add to the celebratory feeling, Nicole had just received news she was pregnant. Always the gentleman, Ted arranged a lovely surprise for the second night: he had the room decorated with rose petals, a bubble bath, sparkling cider and we had a really nice meal in-room.

Grand Hyatt Kauai

How to have this honeymoon: Hawaii is expensive, and Kauai may be the most expensive island. Look for better deals on the Big Island—several of the Kohala Coast properties are every bit as stunning as the Poipu resorts. November is when you’ll get the best bargains. January is also sale season, but it rains heavily. If you’re on the East coast with limited time and/or funds, trust us: Puerto Rico and Costa Rica are equally beautiful, lush and exotic—with nearly the same amount of English speakers.
Kim & Eddie

Nothing could dampen Kim and Eddie Estrada’s Miami Beach honeymoon—not even torrential rain. “Eddie and I rented mopeds, went to the beach, and stopped on the way back to get coffee. It started pouring, and we thought, You know what we don’t have to be anywhere, we’re not at home, we’re just going to sit on the table and get soaked. Then we got back on the Moped and rode up and down the street,” Kim remembers.

Truly, though, they did have somewhere to be: their honeymoon hotel was the Anglers Resort in South Beach, known for its outstanding seafood restaurant and super-sexy outdoor Jacuzzis. In between hot tub canoodling and Moped rides, the Estradas took Jet skis out into the water, where there was a minor panic over a fin sighting—till they realized it was a dolphin, swimming along beside them.

Hilton Bentley

How to have this honeymoon: The Anglers Resort is a great pick for a romantic getaway. It’s intimate, cute and centrally located. If it’s booked, try the Hilton Bentley, which is quite a bit bigger and has all-suite accommodations, many overlooking the ocean. The Shore Club and the Setai are both extremely sexy, but very expensive and with much smaller rooms than the Bentley. When looking for airfare or hotel, note that winter is high season in Miami—you might find better deals in June.

Monique & Gus

Monique and Gus Rubalcaba were “treated like stars” during their honeymoon at Club Med Turkoise in the Turks & Caicos. “I literally cried upon our arrival and cried thinking of leaving,” admits the bride. She remembers entire days spent on the beach, starting with early-morning walks to collect shells, long lazy afternoons enjoying each others’ company, and one particular night where the sky was full of shooting stars. There was also a bit of adventure—in particular, an exciting introduction to parasailing and a day spent out at sea exploring coral reefs.

Turks & Caicos: Perfect For Honeymooners

How to have this honeymoon: As one of the lesser-traveled and more luxurious Caribbean destinations, Turks & Caicos is perfect for honeymooners—and more affordable than you might think. If you don’t need an all-inclusive, and you don’t want to be in the Grace Bay “resort zone” area, try Northwest Point, an all-suite property on Northwest beach, or Leeward Resort, a new-ish property 5 minutes from Grace Bay. Both properties have offered deep discounts recently, and summer (April-December) is low season, when you’re likely to find bargains. For flights, check out Jet Blue, which recently expanded service to the destination.

Jessica & Namid

We were wowed by the photos of Jessica and Namid Nolan’s honeymoon at Secrets Silversands Riviera Cancun, a couples-only luxury all-inclusive beach resort. The couple set some time aside to do an official photo shoot to commemorate the honeymoon—which is a super-smart way to ensure flattering images to remember the trip, in our opinion. The Mungers still keep in touch with several other couples they met on their honeymoon…and now, they have news to share with them (and you): They just got back from a first BABYMOON, and are expecting in December, 2011.

Zoëtry Resorts

How to have this honeymoon: There are many great all-inclusives in the Riviera Maya, which is the general area that Riviera Cancun resort is located. If you love spa and wellness, the first place on your list should be Secrets’ sister brand, Zoëtry. Both these brands are on the more expensive side, so if you’re looking for a deal, check the boutique properties in Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Isla Mujeres. All three are sexy destinations, too—fewer Spring Breakers and families, more international couples.

Michelle & Josh: MFW Season 3

Although Michelle and Josh from Season 3 still hope for an “official” honeymoon, they found time to take their new mini-truck to Napa for a one-day getaway after the wedding. While there, they visited Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga, on the northern edge of Napa County. For a newlywed couple, this was the best possible place to go: it’s a stunning replication of an Italian castle, with turrets and beautiful gardens and sparkling wine perfect for toasting each others’ happiness. “The first time my husband and I kissed as a married couple, it was in a castle!” remembers Michelle.

Napa Valley

How to have this honeymoon: If money’s no object, there are many gorgeous resorts right by the castle that are known for their hot springs spas. The Solage is stunning, as is Indian Springs Resort & Spa. However, since money is an object for most newlyweds, we suggest the Cottage Grove Inn or, if you want to stay in the town of Napa, the Napa River Inn. When checking flights, know that SFO is more convenient to Calistoga, but central Napa is a straight shot from Oakland Airport.

Eulala & Christopher

And here’s one other couple who also had a Turks + Caicos experience. Lucky Eulala and Christopher stayed in a beachfront suite in the gorgeous Gansevoort hotel for seven days, thanks to the amazing David Tutera. Our superstar wedding planner proved himself able to organize a dream honeymoon as well: the blissed-out newlyweds partook of couples’ massage, went horseback riding in the ocean, and enjoyed their first married “date night” poolside, dining by torch light.
St. Barths

How to have this honeymoon: We’ve already talked about the Turks & Caicos—so now, let’s expand on the theme of posh Caribbean spots. If you’re depending on American Airlines to fly you from the mid-States, plan on connecting through St. Martin, where you could conceivably take a ferry out to either St. Barths or Anguilla. Both these islands are safe, beautiful and super-romantic. Anguilla is quiet, while St. Barths has a bar and restaurant scene. And note that, in any of these destinations, prices for off-peak season drop as much as 50%.

Jade Mountain: Plan A Getaway

Why let the honeymoon mark the end of your away-from-home romantic adventures? We’re in total agreement with sparky “Superstar Bride” Joanne O’Leary-Eustache’s sentiment: “It’s important for couples to plan a getaway every year. It doesn’t have to be expensive, and can even be within the city you live in. Get a nice hotel for a couple of days and just enjoy each other. Take care of one another, and remind yourselves why you love each other,” she advises.

In this spirit, Joanne and her husband Jean Paul will celebrate their first anniversary in September at a fantastic J.W. Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, California, while still saving up money for their dream honeymoon, which they plan to celebrate at Jade Mountain in St. Lucia.

J.W. Marriott Desert Springs

How to have this honeymoon: We approve of the J.W. Marriott Desert Springs for just about any special occasion: anniversary like the O’Leary-Eustaches are doing, bachelorette weekend, destination wedding, mini-moon or even a family reunion. Spanning 450 acres in the posh Palm Desert region right outside Palm Springs, the property has its own nightclub, a spa the size of a Roman palace, and a poolside scene to rival Los Angeles and Las Vegas hot spots.

Speaking of hot: Temperatures in the desert climb to over 100 degrees by the end of May and stay there till the end of September. This is also when you can find the best hotel rates. Winter is high season.

If you don’t live in Southern California, note that Palm Desert is a 2 1/2-hour drive from LA or San Diego, and about 90 minutes from San Bernadino. Stay 3-4 nights there next time you visit one of the big So Cal cities, and you’ll see why it’s locals’ favorite quick escape.
