Meredith on Episode 4: Cookout

One thing our family loves to do is barbecue, and we love to do it with family and friends.  The problem is that we used to cookout at Sinbad’s.  His back yard was made for this sort of thing.  He had the outdoor kitchen area, large barbeque and basketball court.  It was perfect yard for entertaining.  This time, however, we had to do things a little different.  We had the barbecue at my house.

My yard was ok, no basketball court, but it works.  No outside kitchen but I do have a grill.  Not good enough.  We buy a new grill.  It’s not what he had before, but it’s OK.  The kids were in charge of cleaning.  They encountered a snake in the pool bathroom.  A Snake! Now animal control has to be called.  While Paige helps me come up with the menu, she insults my Panuches.  I take insult and the Battle of the Panuche was on.

On my side of family, the Panuche is serious business. It is not for the lighthearted.  This recipe has been in my family for three generations now.  It was handed down from my grandmother to my mother and then to myself and my sister-in-law. I also passed it down to my daughter.  My grandmother and mother made them best.  The challenge has been duplicating the exact taste & texture combination. In fact, whenever my family gets together, one night is devoted to making Panuches and it’s a battle. Fighting for the title of Best Panuche is my brother, my sister-in-law, Paige and myself.  There are 17 of us, and everybody has a vote.  It’s a lot of fun, but if your Panuche’s doesn’t make the cut, you will never live it down.

My daughter makes a darn good Panuche, but her mamas are still better.
