HOMETOWN: Flint, MI
There’s no doubt about it, LaWanda’s got a heart of gold and a personality to match. While her life has been full of challenges and heartbreaks, she always manages to see the brighter side of the situation.
Retirement has given her and her husband Doug a second opportunity to live out their life long dreams. Doug’s vocal and guitar talents landed him in a 50s/60s Rock ‘N Roll band “The Road Runners,” a very well-known band in the Sun City Area. LaWanda’s dancing talents landed her in “High Voltage” (a dance troupe for skilled dancers) as well as in the “Grandettes” (a local dance troupe created by a retired Radio City Rockette).
Unfortunately, Doug was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease a year ago and was recently diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), which forced them both to slow down a bit. LaWanda’s strength clearly stems from the love and support of her family, which includes 3 stepsons, 2 sons and 15 amazing grandchildren. LaWanda lost her only daughter to cancer 3 years ago. Their house is very full right now, but what could be better than a house filled with love and support.
