Tamar’s Hair Stylist Larry Sims Shares Hair Secrets

Love fashionista Tamar’s stylish looks? Wonder how she stays glam on and off the stage? Her hair stylist Larry Sims shares some of her secrets. Plus, he reveals the go-to look every woman should rock.

What hair products does Tamar use?
Tamar uses Smooth ‘N Shine, got2b products and Sebastian® hair spray.

What’s Tamar’s go-to hair color?
Tamar’s best look is honey blonde with dark roots. We’ve been toying with mid-tone browns and even blacks.

What’s her best/winning look?
Her best look is a part down the middle. A hairstyle similar to Farrah Fawcett’s featherd winged hair.

Does anyone come in asking for the “Tamar”?
No, but I get a lot of people on Instagram and Twitter that ask about her looks.

Do you style any of her family members?
Yes, I styled Toni, Towanda, Traci, Trina and Evelyn. They’ve all been in my chair.

Do you have any other celebrity clients?
Tons! Queen Latifah, Victoria Beckham, Kerry Washington, Gabrielle Union, Paula Abdul, Joy Bryant.

What are some common hairstyle mistakes?
In general, less is more when it comes to hair. Women go to the salon and want perfect hair – but that’s not “in” anymore. No one should look like they over-styled their hair.

How often should you shampoo?
It depends on how much or fast your scalp gets oily. For oilier scalps, every other day; for dry scalps, once a week.

Tips for split ends?
Cuticle repair treatments or leave-in treatments in between shampooing.

Tips to keep hair moisturized?
Use leave-in conditioner and keeping it protected from thermal heat.

Can you share some 2013 hairstyle trends?
Rich and natural textures, whether wavy or curly. Great trends include braids and any textured styles are always fashion forward. Sleek up-dos, tight buns and pony tails are also in.

What celebrity hair look is in?
Right now – Sarah Jessica Parker. As far as short, pixie hair, I like Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Rihanna. And I like Beyonce’s messy look.

What celebrity would you like to give a “makeover”?
I would love to makeover Lindsay Lohan. She needs to be a bit more polished and more glamorous. She needs to live up to the superstar she is. And she should exemplify her status.

What are 4 hair care products you can’t live without?
Got2b Rockin’ It Dry Shampoo, It’s A 10 Leave In Conditioner, Smooth ‘N Shine Hair Polisher, and Sebastian Shaper Zero Gravity Hair Spray.

How did you get into hair?
I used to be a dancer and I used to dance for the Braxtons when they were a group. I also worked with Missy Elliot and then one day just transitioned into a hairstylist. It was a natural evolution really. I went to school in 2002 at the Harvard of Hair, Pivot Point International. I got my first big break in 2007 when Ken Paves asked me to work on Victoria Beckham’s hair because he couldn’t do it at that time.

If you weren’t doing hair, what would you be doing?
Dancing/choreographer or an actor or a record label executive.

Any other tips you’d like to share with our Tamar fans?
For all the Tamartians out there, just know that less is more. Have fun with your hair and image. Hair defines who are you and it’s the first thing people see.

Anything else about Tamar?
Tamar is hilarious. She is not acting when she’s on TV. I’ve known Tamar since I was 17, and she’s been that way since we were kids. Despite what people think, she is a softy and has a huge heart.
