Heather & Lori
Heather White and Lori Joyce are best friends and co-founders of Cupcakes, a stylish Vancouver-based retail bakery specializing in whimsical cupcakes, cakes and other nostalgic baked goods, baked fresh daily. They met working in retail when they were 15 years old in Victoria, BC and shared a common dream of owning their own company one day. After high school Heather moved to Calgary and worked in the fashion industry while Lori earned a Bachelor of Science degree in animal biology before they both moved on to sales jobs in various industries.
In the fall of 2001, Heather and Lori found themselves working together in New York. Ironically, the tragic and devastating events of September 11th inspired Heather and Lori to pursue their dream and start a new business. They decided that their business had to be light, fresh, fun and a return to simpler times. At the age of 27, the two best friends came up with the idea to open a cupcakes bakery.
Their first bakery opened in April 2002 on Denman Street in Vancouver’s West End and it remains today. Their unique business idea thrived and four years later they opened their second location on West Broadway – they now have two corporate bakeries and four franchise bakeries across Vancouver’s Lower Mainland, and another franchise set to open in Victoria this year.
While they both share the drive and determination to succeed, Heather’s strengths can be seen in the attention to detail required to successfully brand and market the Cupcakes’ product lines, while Lori focuses her energy on the exciting opportunities created by their bold decision to franchise the Cupcakes brand that they have worked so hard to create.
They both have a strong commitment to the communities that support them; in addition to donating a portion of the proceeds from the Cause Cupcakes program (customized cause-specific Cupcakes designed in partnership with charitable foundations,) both Heather and Lori often share their business experiences with other would-be entrepreneurs and speak at various industry events and business associations. The duo is now recognized as two of BC’s top entrepreneurs and their success and unfailing friendship continues to inspire many to follow in their footsteps.
