In prison, I was determined to make the most out of this inhumane situation. I had a newborn, a two-year-old, a nine-year-old, elderly parents, family, and friends. I wanted them to be proud of me, so I had to be extremely conscious of the choices I make. This also meant to have the time serve me instead of serving time.

Daily life in prison? Well, to tell you the truth it is incredibly monotonous. Its part of the way they (prison officials) punish us. Prison is hard to describe in any form or matter. I would tell someone that has never been here to avoid it AT ALL COSTS because it is very hard to live your life in any kind of humane manner here.

I am asked if there are any positive moments I've experienced while in prison. Initially, that might seem like a straight forward, simple question, but it really isn't.

Life in prison is hard at best. At worst, it is your worst nightmare. There are many difficulties that face a woman.....loneliness, missing loved ones, and if you have health issues, not being well.

Prison is not the scary cauldron of violence that is depicted by the media/TV outlets. It is a place where normal people go when the circumstances of life have taken a turn for the worst. The women I have met here have been abused in every possible way.

The first thing is dealing with my losses and acknowledging my losses and accepting the fact – as I get up each morning at 5:30AM – I jump down from my top bunk, use the toilet, wash my hands and then my face as I’m looking in the mirror.

Prison can be a very lonely place filled with yelling, screaming, slamming doors, whistles. There’s a lot of waiting, standing in line, waiting, sitting, waiting, watching and then more waiting.

For being in prison, my daily life is quite full. I train service dogs full-time. I currently have a black Labrador named Bode.

My name is Diane Hamill Metzger, I am almost 59 years old and I am in my 33rd year of serving a Pennsylvania life sentence for being an "accomplice" to a killing that my husband committed. When I was arrested I was only 25 years old.

Carmen Ortiz

I live in a world that is very foreign to me. I came from a "Brady Bunch" home and have been thrown into a home filled with constant filthy language, total lack of respect for others, verbal abuse and physical fighting.

My day in prison begins at 3:30AM when all the lights come on and 33 other women start rattling around. I walk 1/4 mile to stand in a long line to take my medications; regardless of the temperature and the darkness.

My daily life in prison—I am a dorm worker because of physical problems.  I had always been an active person but now I clean toilets, pass out laundry and read...
