Did you know that 1 in 3 children in the United States are overweight or obese?
FoodCorps is a new national service organization that is working to reverse childhood obesity by increasing vulnerable children’s knowledge of, engagement with, and access to healthy food. They’re looking for young men and women interested in food, agriculture, community organizing, education, health, and public service to serve in the first class of FoodCorps members. FoodCorps members will spend their year of full-time public service in school food systems – sourcing healthful local food for school cafeterias, expanding nutrition education programs, and building and tending school gardens.
FoodCorps Members who complete their term of service will receive:
- A biweekly stipend totaling $15,000 for the year
- Health insurance, if not covered under another policy
- Child care, if necessary
- Student loan forbearance
- A $5,550 Education Award for past or future education
- Career mentoring, professional development, and strong work experience
They’re accepting applications for the first term of service until April 10, 2011
Because one of the goals of FoodCorps is to grow a new generation of farmers and public health leaders, early-career applicants will have an advantage. If you’re a mid-career or late-career individual, you’re encouraged to join their mailing list to receive information about volunteering at a FoodCorps site.
