Bio:
Senior us senator of Arizona. Age 71, married with three children from his first marriage.
Born into a line of army men, McCain was born in the Panama Canal when his father was stationed there as a US Navy Admiral. Following in his father's footsteps, he joined the Naval Academy and was sent to Vietnam in 1967. McCain twice cheated death - once during a practice aircraft run and the second during a battle in Vietnam. In October 1967, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for five years, finally being released in 1973. In 1976 he became the Navy's liaison to the Senate then retired from the Navy in 1981 as a captain. In 1982 McCain ran for US Senator of Arizona and won. He was a presidential candidate for the 2000 election but was defeated by George W. Bush for the Republican nomination.
In April 2007, McCain announced his intention to seek the Republican Party's nomination for President in the 2008 Presidential election.
Economy:
Believes tax cuts and lowered spending will reduce the deficit. Wants to end spending in Congress on special interest projects and believes elected officials should be held accountable on how they spend taxpayer’s dollars.
Healthcare:
Opposes a federal backed universal healthcare program.
Education:
Supports the use of education vouchers, merit pay for teachers, and increased funding for schools.
Homeland Security:
Believes a strong military is key to keeping America safe. Supports the Patriot Act and believes in providing increased resources to intelligence agencies.
War in Iraq/Afghanistan:
Supports current administration's plan.
