Age: 28 Location: Frederick, MD Years of Experience: 2 Amanda is a bright and fresh-faced artist who never dreamed that she would be designing cakes for a living. She has a degree in studio art and always considered herself a sculptor... even though she had no idea what to do after she graduated. After countless nights watching “Ace of Cakes,” however, Amanda discovered a new medium for her art. “If the they can do it,” she said. “Then so can I.” She bought a book from Colette Peters and began “sculpting” cakes that were “artistic, fun and quirky.” Two years later, she rents a shared commercial space to support her company, “The Artful Cake.” She imagines and designs at home with her husband and spends the evenings baking and decorating in the shared kitchen with her assistant Dori. According to Amanda, the opportunity to compete against the people sheʼs looked up to all these years would be an honor. Not only could she make a name for her young business, but it would give “the shadow side” of her a chance to say to the pros, “Look what I did.
