I'm Ron Ben-Israel, and I have been baking and decorating wedding cakes since 1994. I enjoy getting to know other bakers and decorators, and am passionate about teaching and promoting the appreciation for well-made cakes. While working on this show it has been amazing meeting such a variety of talented and dedicated individuals. We all share the same passion for creativity and excellence! Having the audience watch the progress of the contestants made things much more exciting. Having my own business allowed me to come to the spotlight and develop my own style. Since I began, I've experienced a tremendous growth both personally, and as a member of this vivid community. I've also had to move up in waist size, but it's worth it. Most weddings are an elaborate, once-in-a-lifetime affair. The wedding cake is an integral part of the occasion, and is the ultimate expression of the celebrants and their chosen baker. We usually have a nice budget to work with, and a great chance to show-off skills and artistic vision. I always love the cakes I'm planning for the next season. I dream about the designs, experiment with the new concepts, and taste all the flavor variations. It's always about moving ahead and anticipating the next trend. And every cake is like opening night! The #1 tip for people entering cake competitions would be to take an honest look at the requirements and guidelines, and evaluate your preparedness. Practice as much as possible beforehand, and have in mind a plan B. And remember, at Wedding Cake Wars we want you to succeed - remain flexible and listen to suggestions. The same three traits that will get you down, will also bring you success - if balanced and used wisely. Obsession, Individuality, Flair. To make a great cake it takes inspiration, training, and practice, practice, practice. And the ultimate cake for me will exhibit originality, skill, and passion. Even though at the end of the "wars" there will be winners, nobody is going to be a loser. Every contestant in the show is chosen from hundreds of applicants, and therefore they have already succeeded. My role is to advise and guide each participant, and the rest is up to them. In the first episode, the first prize winner used her local competitor as an assistant. What a demonstration of good spirit! I hope they compete again, and reverse the roles. |
