Bridezilla Prevention Tips

Warning: extreme wedding stress can bring out Bridezilla tendencies, even in the most laid-back brides. Follow these simple tips to stay sane, reduce stress, and keep your inner ‘zilla at bay.

Lean on Your Friends, Don’t Push Them Away
Studies show that social support actually reduces the perception of stress. Be sure to use the face-to-face time with your girls to your advantage, rather than barking orders or kicking them out of your bridal party like some Bridezillas are prone to do. (Think that’s bad? Bridezilla Tifani even went as far as to lace brownies with laxatives to teach a groomsman a lesson!) Turn wedding prep into a mix of business and pleasure. Order in pizzas and have an envelope stuffing party. Ask your BFF to come along to your next dress fitting. And ask your maid-of-honor to keep you company while you check off those tedious wedding to-dos from the list.

Stick to a Balanced Diet
You know what’s worse than a Bridezilla? A hungry Bridezilla. Extreme wedding diets make brides cranky, stressed, and generally miserable to be around. There’s no need to live off of celery sticks to fit into your dream dress. Eat a balanced diet packed with fruits, veggies, lean protein and whole grains to maintain that fab figure (and your sanity). And when it comes to snacking, you can still have your treats. Just remember that moderation is key.

Exercise to Unwind
As we’ve seen season after season, some Bridezillas are known to get really violent when they’re unhappy. Ripping your veil to shreds or smashing a card box to pieces won’t solve your problems. So when you’re feeling revved up, hit the gym, not people or things. Research shows that regular exercise helps “stress-proof” your brain so you’ll see long-term benefits and find it easier to chill out under pressure. Just don’t take this tip too far and enlist your bridesmaids in boot camp like Bridezilla Ruby.

Get Your Beauty Sleep
A good night’s sleep is crucial to staying stress-free. (Did you know exercise actually helps you fall asleep faster? Just stop your workout two hours before bedtime.) Wind down an hour before bed by turning off the computer and taking a break from your wedding to-dos. Read a book or even meditate to relax. Just warn your friends and family not to wake a sleeping Bridezilla!

Pamper Yourself
A little pre-wedding pampering can go a long way when it comes to reducing stress. Before the big day, block out some much needed time to unwind. Get a manicure, pedicure, massage or facial with your friends. Just don’t let anyone get pizza sauce in your hair extensions like Bridezilla Marlene… or a day of rest and relaxation will go downhill fast!

Don’t Get in Over Your Head
From parents to vendors, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the people weighing in on your wedding. Take their opinions with a grain of salt. When something doesn’t feel right, trust your gut and don’t give into the pressure. If life-sized ice sculptures aren’t your thing, or you don’t want to splurge on an over the top cocktail hour … just say no! Trying to please everyone else adds unnecessary anxiety to an already high-stress situation. Believe it or not, Bridezilla Suzy wished she didn’t even have a wedding!
