Inmate Name: Charaty White Charaty White grew up in a depressed neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri where the streets were filled with violence and illegal activity. Because of the surroundings she lived in, Charaty grew up fast and left home at the age of 15. Having to fend for herself, she got wrapped up with the chaos found on the streets. Charaty was known to police for drug dealing, burglary and admittedly carrying a weapon. She was also in a gang and given the nickname ?Baby Doll?. In late December 1999, Charaty told her friend, Jerome Harden, that she could introduce him to someone who would sell him marijuana. They waited together in a car for her connection, Charles Liston, to arrive with the drugs. Unbeknownst to Jerome, Charles and Charaty had other plans. According to police, the two planned to rob Jerome of the money he brought to buy the marijuana. When Charles arrived, things didn?t go as planned. A struggle between Jerome and Charles ended when Charles shot Jerome in the face, killing him. Charles and Charaty fled the scene in a get-away car driven by Charaty?s boyfriend, Demetrious Ursery. Police didn?t know yet who had murdered Jerome Harden until 19 year old Danielle Montgomery, the girlfriend of Charles Liston, walked into the St. Louis Police Department with information on the case. She told police that Charles had confessed to being responsible for Jerome?s death and that his two accomplices were ?Baby Doll? and Ursery. Danielle was in an abusive relationship with Charles and she feared him. The police were concerned for Danielle?s safety, so they listed her as a ?secret witness? and proceeded to look for Charles on the streets. Surprising detectives, Danielle returned to the station a couple of days later with Charles. Danielle tricked Charles into coming to the police station, thinking he was there to clear up domestic abuse charges against him. Police immediately arrested Charles for the murder of Jerome Harden and then picked up Charaty and Demetrius. Charaty was questioned and released. With Charles Liston in custody, Danielle was now on her own. Police asked her to keep in contact with them, and Danielle promised to do so. But she had second thoughts about what she had done. She visited Charles in prison and regretted turning him in. She told him she would not testify against him, but it was too late and Charles wanted Danielle to pay for her treachery. He called Charaty and his new girlfriend, Tiny, to coordinate a hit on Danielle. Charles convinced Danielle to move in with Tiny in May of 2000. According to investigators, it was all part of a sinister plan to keep Danielle away from the police until he could arrange for her murder. From his jail cell, Charles called Charaty repeatedly, trying to convince her that she should kill Danielle for being a snitch. He also reminded her that with Danielle dead, he and Charaty?s boyfriend, Demetrious, would walk on the murder of Harden. Charaty loved Demetrious and didn?t want him to be convicted of murder, and at the time, believed she might be pregnant with Ursery?s child. On May 3, investigators say that Charaty agreed to put Charles? plan into action. She and Tiny recruited a friend, Crystal Barge, whose nickname was ?Unladylike?, and the three women went to Tiny?s apartment where Danielle was babysitting Tiny?s three small children. The three girls beat and stabbed Danielle in a brutal surprise attack. They continued to torture her with cigarettes, mop water, a telephone cord and even urine. The prison telephone records show that Charles called several times throughout the attack. The medical examiner determined it took two hours before Danielle died. After her death, the girls wrapped her up in sheets, dragged her body outside and dumped it in the alleyway. Charaty and Crystal took off. Tiny called the police and claimed she simply ?found? the body. The police arrived on the scene and pieced the crime together. They questioned Tiny who confessed to everything and was arrested that night. Charaty and Crystal were arrested a few days later. Charaty is now serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of Danielle Montgomery. She is serving her sentence at the Women?s Eastern Correctional Center in Vandalia, Missouri. |
