GUHH Stars Follow Their Own Path
Growing up in the shadow - and sometimes the spotlight - of your parent’s career can be a bit daunting. Imagine if your parents are celebrities that have cemented their place in music history. The Growing Up Hip Hop cast members are dealing with just that while trying to carve out their own niche and make a name for themselves.
Some of the show’s stars chatted with Rolling Out Magazine about how they're paving their own way. Romeo Miller, son of Master P, has had a successful career in music, but he’s also making a name for himself in the acting world while working towards taking over his father's record label. “It’s about growth. Your parents want something bigger and better for you,” Romeo explained. “We have our own journey.”
Boogie Dash, son of music mogul Damon Dash, is following the same entrepreneurial path as his dad, but instead of music, he's in the food industry. “I don’t think I’m doing the same thing as my dad at all. I’m more in the food business. I have a cookie business called Chipz Cookies,” said Boogie.
TJ Mizell spins records like his father - the legendary Jam Master Jay from Run-D.M.C. However, his style is different than his father’s was. “Run-D.M.C. were the guys to take rock n’ roll and hip hop and bring them together, so they were the ones to break that boundary. For me, I love electronic dance music,” explained Mizell.
Angela Simmons, daughter of the legendary Rev Run, also hails from the Run-D.M.C. family. She may not be in the music industry rhyming to hip hop beats, but she is taking the fashion industry by storm. “The great part about coming from a background that is already well off, is that we already have the recognition. But it’s about what you do with the recognition. I feel like that’s what is key - that's what's important,” Simmons said. She went on to add that she isn’t pursuing music because that would mean she would have to drop everything she is working on.
