Vanessa Simmons Talks Growing Up with a Famous Last Name

Growing Up Hip Hop star, Angela Simmons’ big sister Vanessa, is dishing on what it’s like growing up with a famous last name and a legendary legacy.

Vanessa spoke with BET about growing up and maturing as a Simmons.

“Having the last name is both a blessing; I won’t say a curse, it’s not a curse, but a blessing and a hindrance,” she explains.

She went on to say that she is blessed that she grew up surrounded by amazing people. However, the hindrance is another story. “People don’t allow the Simmons kids to grow at a normal rate,” she revealed.

Vanessa explained that people often think that coming from the Run D.M.C. legacy means that you are set for life, but as the oldest of seven kids, Vanessa says that’s not realistic. WE have seen a snippet of what it takes on #GUHH. “It takes time to grow that horn, it takes time to become a unicorn, you have to give us that time.” As for if she has become that mythical figure, she says she’s constantly evolving and doesn’t have the horn yet, but she’s super close!

Family is important to the Simmons girls, and Vanessa says her parents are her greatest inspiration.

She revealed the best advice she's received from her dad Rev. Run, “Do your best and forget the rest."

“We can get so wrapped up, trying to do so much, trying to hit all these goals, but honestly the only thing we can do is just do our best and let everything else fall where it may.”

Can’t go wrong with that! WE can’t wait to see more of Vanessa and the rest of the Growing Up Hip Hop crew when the series returns later this year!
