Why Jermaine Dupri Is About to Make History!

2018 is already lit with honors for Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta father and mentor, Jermaine Dupri.

According to Billboard, the music mogul will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June of this year. This comes after news of receiving the Breaking Barriers Award at the Global Spin Awards, set to air later this month. And don't forget, in January, JD was honored at the Trumpet Awards with the Music Innovation Award.

The induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame means JD is making history as the second artist to represent hip hop. Jay-Z became the first last year.

In a statement issued to the Associated Press, Linda Moran (president/CEO) and the organization’s co-chairs, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff said,

“The 2018 roster of Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees is a prodigious representation of creators of cross-genre hits, certain to resonate with everyone. Each year, the slate of songwriters we induct is more diverse and illustrative of the history and contributions that we strive to acknowledge and honor.”

JD is responsible for helping shape the sound of hip-hop/R&B from the 90s to the mid-2000s. He’s crafted classic hits for Mariah Carey, Xscape, Monica, Janet Jackson, Usher and Jagged Edge. Under his So So Def label, he built careers for artists like #GUHHATL’s Shad Moss, Xscape, Kriss Kross, and more.

JD was ecstatic when he heard the news!

I can’t fucking believe it!!! This what all the long nights and early mornings is all about #SOSODEF25

Other musicians that will be inducted alongside Dupri include Alan Jackson, John Mellencamp and Kool & the Gang. Songwriters are eligible for induction after writing hit songs for at least 20 years. The ceremony will be held on June 14th, WE want to congratulate Jermaine Dupri on this wonderful honor!

WE can’t wait to see what industry advice he has for Shad Moss when Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta airs on Thursday at 9|8c.
